kicad-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

kicad-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from muammar-yacoob/kicad-mcp. It costs 1,880 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A project instruction file for KiCad MCP, a server that lets an AI agent automate printed-circuit-board design tasks in KiCad. It documents the project, development commands and local or web server modes.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when developing this KiCad automation server, including PCB design, design-rule cleanup, bill-of-materials generation, 3D rendering and production-cost analysis.
Why use it?
It gives the coding agent the repository context and the commands needed to install, run, build and publish the server correctly.

This is muammar-yacoob/kicad-mcp's own configuration. It tells Claude Code how to work on kicad-mcp itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything kicad-mcp configures →

Needs its repository: it reads a path above its own folder, which exists only inside the repository. The line is import { registerTools } from '../core/tools.js'; // Correct.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01880 $0.01880
Opus 5 $0.00940 $0.00940
Sonnet 5 $0.00376 $0.00376
Haiku 4.5 $0.00188 $0.00188

Security

Grade A, and why

kicad-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

KiCad MCP is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server designed to automate KiCad PCB design tasks through natural language and API endpoints. Built on FastMCP, it provides LLM-driven automation for PCB design, DRC cleanup, BOM generation, 3D rendering, and cost analysis.

The goal is to enable commands like:

  • "Generate a 4-layer PCB for an ESP32 dev board with USB-C power"
  • "Fix all unconnected nets and rebalance copper fills"
  • "Render a realistic 3D model with silkscreen and component textures"
  • "Estimate production cost for 100 units via JLCPCB"

Development Commands

# Install dependencies
npm install # or bun install, yarn, pnpm

# Run the stdio server (for CLI/local use with Claude Desktop)
npm start
npm run dev # with auto-reload

# Run the HTTP server (for web/network use)
npm run start:http
npm run dev:http # with auto-reload

# Build for production
npm run build # builds stdio server to build/index.js
npm run build:http # builds HTTP server to build/http-server.js
npm run prepublishOnly # builds both

# Versioning and release
npm run version:patch
npm run version:minor
npm run version:major
npm run release

# Generate changelog
npm run changelog
npm run changelog:latest

Architecture

Core Structure

The server follows a modular FastMCP architecture with three main registration points:

  1. Tools (src/core/tools.ts) — Executable MCP tools that perform actions
  2. Resources (src/core/resources.ts) — Data resources accessible via URI templates
  3. Prompts (src/core/prompts.ts) — Pre-defined prompt templates for LLM interactions

All three are registered in src/server/server.ts during server initialization.

Entry Points

  • stdio mode: src/index.ts — Creates server and starts stdio transport
  • HTTP mode: src/server/http-server.ts — Creates server and starts HTTP/SSE transport

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
