node-mcp-server AGENTS.md

node-mcp-server AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from my-mcp-hub/node-mcp-server. It costs 649 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A project guide for contributing to the node-mcp-server codebase, covering its tools, structure, rules, and checks. MCP is a standard way for programs to provide tools and data to AI assistants.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when installing dependencies, building, testing, running the server, checking its command-line modes, or validating package contents.
Why use it?
It records the repository's expected Node.js version, commands, architecture rules, and testing process so changes can be made consistently.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00649 $0.00649
Opus 5 $0.00324 $0.00324
Sonnet 5 $0.00130 $0.00130
Haiku 4.5 $0.00065 $0.00065

Security

Grade A, and why

node-mcp-server AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Repository guide

Toolchain and verification

  • Use Node 22 (.nvmrc) and npm 10; package-lock.json is the dependency source of truth. Use npm ci for a clean install.
  • npm run check matches CI's lint, build, coverage sequence; build itself runs type-check, esbuild, then tsc-alias.
  • Run one test file with npx vitest run tests/tools/index.test.ts; add -t 'test name' for one case.
  • npm run dev:stdio and npm run dev:web watch the source and start MCP Inspector. The web endpoint is http://localhost:8401/mcp.
  • npm pack --dry-run validates the publish allowlist and triggers a fresh production build; CI uses --ignore-scripts only because it builds first.

Architecture and invariants

  • src/index.ts is the CLI entrypoint. Omitting the command starts stdio; stdio is also accepted explicitly, while web selects Streamable HTTP. Only web accepts --port; it and PORT must resolve to an integer from 1 to 65535.
  • Production builds preserve every src/**/*.ts module under build with bundle: false; tsc-alias rewrites @/ imports and adds Node ESM .js suffixes. Keep scripts/aliasReplacer.cjs, tsconfig.json, and the esbuild output layout synchronized.
  • src/services/index.ts#createServer is the shared server factory. Register tools, resources, and prompts through their src registrars so both transports expose the same behavior.
  • The HTTP transport uses Fastify; Express middleware and lifecycle patterns do not apply.
  • src/data/documents.ts is the single built-in knowledge-base source; record changes affect tool ranking, resource URIs/listing, prompt completion, and their tests.
  • The server and tests pin MCP protocol 2026-07-28. Avoid session-ID-dependent behavior because the HTTP handler creates independent server instances.
  • Tools with an outputSchema must return matching structuredContent and a text fallback.

Test and runtime gotchas

  • Vitest global setup launches a real web server and setup launches a real stdio child; transport tests iterate over both clients.
  • Even a focused test starts HTTP on port 8401. Stop dev:web or any other listener first, and keep Vitest at one worker because the shared port and global clients are not parallel-safe.
  • Never write ordinary logs to stdout on the stdio path; stdout carries MCP protocol messages.
  • src/assets/mcp.stdio.json and src/assets/mcp.http.json configure Inspector launch targets.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
