.github/instructions/my-copilot.instructions.md

copilot my-copilot.instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from navikt/copilot. It costs 596 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository guidance for an AI coding assistant working on the navikt/copilot project. It defines rules for authentication, protected routes, user-interface conventions, and safe error handling.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding routes, API handlers, authentication checks, redirects, or interface content in this project.
Why use it?
It helps prevent changes that accidentally expose private pages or data, weaken local-development safeguards, or reveal internal errors to users.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00596 $0.00596
Opus 5.5 $0.00238 $0.00238
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00119 $0.00119
Haiku 4.5 $0.00060 $0.00060

Security

Grade A, and why

copilot my-copilot.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Authentication and BFF boundary

  • Route protection (src/proxy.ts and .nais/app.yaml): Every new page or route.ts handler under src/app/ must either be protected by isPrivatePath in src/proxy.ts or explicitly classified in src/proxy.test.ts and autoLoginIgnorePaths in apps/my-copilot/.nais/app.yaml.
  • Defense in depth in API routes: Private /api/* route handlers (usage, credits, budget, team-year, survey/[id]/responses) must verify await getUser(false) and return 401 when unauthenticated, in addition to the proxy check.
  • Local dev bypass safety: isLocalDev() in src/lib/backend-api.ts must require process.env.NODE_ENV === "development" and absence of NAIS_CLUSTER_NAME before falling back to DEV_COPILOT_API_TOKEN.
  • Upstream error sanitization: Do not forward raw error.message strings from upstream fetches to browser clients in JSON responses. Log the error server-side and return a generic status message.
  • Install redirect validation (src/lib/install-redirect.ts): /install/[type] redirects to vscode: or vscode-insiders: URIs must pass isAllowedInstallUrl, which enforces a single url query parameter pointing to https://raw.githubusercontent.com/navikt/ with no path traversal (.., encoded slashes, backslashes), credentials, query string, or fragment.

UI, Aksel, and content conventions

  • Aksel spacing tokens: Use Aksel primitives (Box, VStack, HStack, Bleed) with Aksel spacing tokens (space-*). Do not use Tailwind p-* or m-* spacing classes.
  • Accessibility and ARIA: Prefer native HTML elements (<button>, <nav>, <dialog>, <details>) and Aksel components over custom role= attributes. hooks/ask-first-aria.py blocks unapproved interactive ARIA roles in src/**/*.tsx.
  • Language and terminology: Follow apps/my-copilot/ORDBOK.md for Norwegian domain terms (ferdighet for skill, instruksjon for instruction, agent for agent). Keep /cplt (src/app/cplt/) in English (lang="en") with its dark theme.
  • Link inventory: If a change adds or updates routes, anchors, or site links, run pnpm test src/link-inventory.test.ts (and pnpm link-inventory:update when adding valid new links).

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
