better-codebase AGENTS.md

Repository instructions for maintaining better-codebase, an installable collection of coding-agent skills focused on evidence-based, behavior-preserving reviews.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when adding or changing skills, plugin metadata, supporting references, prompts, or verification steps in the better-codebase repository.
Why use it?
They keep the skills focused, consistent across supported platforms, and resistant to unjustified refactoring or overengineering.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00289 $0.00289
Opus 5 $0.00144 $0.00144
Sonnet 5 $0.00058 $0.00058
Haiku 4.5 $0.00029 $0.00029

Measured 2d ago against content hash 273ebb553812, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

better-codebase AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Better Codebase repository instructions

Treat this repository as an installable collection of agent skills.

Required principles

  • Preserve the evidence-first, behavior-preserving, anti-overengineering purpose.
  • Keep better-codebase orchestration-only; place each domain rule in one owner skill.
  • Use exact evidence, explicit uncertainty, smallest-safe-change guidance, and rejected alternatives.
  • Never add dogmatic architecture, style, coverage, version, or performance rules.

Skill structure

  • Keep skill folders under skills/<skill-name>/.
  • Keep YAML frontmatter to name and description only.
  • Keep each SKILL.md below 500 lines and use imperative instructions.
  • Update agents/openai.yaml when the skill name, purpose, or default prompt changes.
  • Link any supporting reference directly from the owning SKILL.md.

Cross-platform metadata

  • Keep .claude-plugin/plugin.json, .claude-plugin/marketplace.json, .codex-plugin/plugin.json, and .agents/plugins/marketplace.json aligned.
  • Keep version numbers synchronized across plugin manifests and CHANGELOG.md.
  • Preserve the standard skills/<name>/SKILL.md layout.

Verification

Run before completion:

python3 scripts/check_repo.py
python3 -m unittest discover -s tests -v

Do not edit generated or unrelated user files to make validation pass.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
