gbdocs-mcp CLAUDE.md

gbdocs-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for coding agents from Nighthawk42/gbdocs-mcp. It costs 506 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for Claude Code, an AI coding assistant, working on gbdocs-mcp. They describe the project's tests, commands, file locations, and rules for handling Game Boy documentation.

In plain words
What is it for?
They guide development, testing, and safe changes to the gbdocs-mcp source code.
Why use it?
They prevent the assistant from inventing hardware facts, changing read-only documentation, or overlooking required checks.

One page per mod, every tool's command on it. A separate URL per tool would split the same page into five that compete with each other.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00506 $0.00506
Opus 5 $0.00253 $0.00253
Sonnet 5 $0.00101 $0.00101
Haiku 4.5 $0.00051 $0.00051

Measured 4d ago against content hash 5e44ca26b4e6, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

gbdocs-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Quick reference

uv sync --extra semantic --dev # install (drop --extra semantic for BM25-only)
uv run pytest # ~600 tests, about a second
uv run python scripts/smoke.py # every tool through real MCP dispatch
uv run python scripts/client_probe.py # drive the server as a real stdio client
uv run gbdocs-mcp # run the server over stdio

Non-negotiables

  1. Never invent hardware facts. This server reformats Pan Docs; it does not author documentation. If the docs are silent, the response says so. Do not add hardcoded tables of Game Boy knowledge — parse it from the docs or report the gap.
  2. Every tool response carries a source naming the page, section and gbdev.io URL.
  3. pandocs/ is read-only. Never write into the docs checkout.
  4. tests/test_opcodes.py must stay green. It cross-checks all 512 opcodes derived from the docs against the vendored Opcodes.json. A failure means the markdown parser drifted — fix the parser, not the test.

Where things live

Logic goes in src/gbdocs_mcp/api.py (the Docs facade). server.py stays a thin MCP wrapper. mdparse.py holds ports of Pan Docs' own Rust preprocessor — when the port and the Rust disagree, the Rust wins, because mismatched slugs break every URL the server emits.

Traps that have already bitten

  • Register bullets are not in bit order (IE lists VBlank first while its table is MSB-first) — match by name, never by position.
  • Older MBC pages use a plain - separator where newer pages use an em-dash.
  • Heading depth is inconsistent; match on heading text, not ## vs ###.
  • Some value tables are raw HTML rather than pipe tables.

Style

Match the surrounding code. Comments explain why a quirk exists — usually "because the docs do this" — not what the line does.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
