imap-mcp-server: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

imap-mcp-server CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from nikolausm/imap-mcp-server. It costs 288 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A project instruction file for an IMAP/SMTP server, where IMAP reads email and SMTP sends it. It explains the TypeScript structure, credential protection, stable tool names, build commands and security rules.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding or modifying email-reading or email-sending operations, service code, exposed tools, shared types, documentation or tests.
Why use it?
It gives coding agents the repository’s boundaries before they change email operations. That helps preserve encrypted credentials, prevent secret logging and keep builds and tests working.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00288 $0.00288
Opus 5 $0.00144 $0.00144
Sonnet 5 $0.00058 $0.00058
Haiku 4.5 $0.00029 $0.00029

Security

Grade A, and why

imap-mcp-server CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Claude-specific notes

  • This is an IMAP/SMTP MCP server (TypeScript, ESM). It uses imapflow for IMAP and nodemailer for SMTP. (It does not use node-imap.)
  • Credentials are stored AES-256 encrypted under ~/.imap-mcp/; all tools return JSON-formatted text.
  • When adding an IMAP/SMTP operation:
    1. Implement it in the relevant service (ImapService / SmtpService).
    2. Expose it via the matching tool file in src/tools/.
    3. Keep tool names (imap_*) stable; write LLM-oriented .describe() text.
    4. Update types in src/types/index.ts, plus README.md and tests.
  • Before committing src/ changes: npm run build && npm test (keep it green).
  • Follow the security rules in @AGENTS.md — no secret logging, no telemetry, no destructive mail ops without explicit guard logic.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
