MinSync: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

MinSync AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from NomaDamas/MinSync. It costs 266 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of instructions for MinSync, a Rust command-line tool that incrementally indexes text files into a vector database. It tracks file changes with a manifest, splits text into chunks, and stores its working state in a .minsync directory.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when changing MinSync, configuring ignored files, understanding its indexing state, troubleshooting incremental updates, or working with text-file chunking and deterministic IDs.
Why use it?
It explains important limits and safety rules, such as binary files not being extracted or indexed and changes being detected without Git. This helps agents avoid treating PDFs, images, or spreadsheets as supported text input.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00266 $0.00266
Opus 5.5 $0.00106 $0.00106
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00053 $0.00053
Haiku 4.5 $0.00027 $0.00027

Security

Grade A, and why

MinSync AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

MinSync

Manifest-based incremental vector DB indexing CLI tool written in Rust. No git required.

Core Principles

  • Git-free: manifest (mtime + size + content_hash) based change detection. Zero git dependency.
  • Rust native: Pure Rust, no C++ dependencies. chonkie-core (chunk crate) built-in.
  • State directory: .minsync/ (config.toml, manifest.json, cursor.json, txn.json, lock)
  • Indexing target: All files in directory. Exclude via .minsyncignore (.gitignore syntax).
  • Text files only: MinSync reads files as UTF-8 text and does NO content extraction. Binary formats (PDF, DOCX, XLSX, images, ...) fail the UTF-8 read and are treated as empty — they are never chunked or embedded. Add them to .minsyncignore. Supporting them would require a separate text-extraction pipeline.
  • Crash-safe: Cursor updated only after all processing completes. mark+sweep guarantees convergence.
  • Deterministic ID: sha256(source_id + \0 + path + \0 + chunk_schema_id + \0 + chunk_type + \0 + content_hash + \0 + dup_index).
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
