talos-mcp-server: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

talos-mcp-server CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from Nosmoht/talos-mcp-server. It costs 1,655 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Instructions for an AI tool that manages Talos Linux clusters through their native management interface. Talos Linux is an operating system built for running Kubernetes clusters.

In plain words
What is it for?
Building and checking the Talos management server, following its development workflow, and safely operating Talos cluster nodes.
Why use it?
It adds safety checks around actions such as rebooting, upgrading, rolling back, resetting nodes, and changing service settings, reducing the chance of an accidental cluster outage or data loss.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01655 $0.01655
Opus 5 $0.00827 $0.00827
Sonnet 5 $0.00331 $0.00331
Haiku 4.5 $0.00166 $0.00166

Security

Grade A, and why

talos-mcp-server CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Safety

Mutating tools require explicit guards — missing any of these will error or cause irreversible cluster damage:

  • talos_reboot, talos_upgrade, talos_rollback, talos_reset all require confirm=true and explicit nodes. talos_service_action requires confirm=true (nodes optional — falls back to talosconfig defaults).
  • talos_service_action: restarting etcd is not supported by the Talos API — use talos_reboot or the investigate-etcd prompt instead.
  • talos_reboot hits all listed nodes simultaneously — specify one at a time to avoid a full outage. Use wait=true to block until complete (default timeout 5m).
  • talos_upgrade preserve defaults to true (keep EPHEMERAL partition) — differs from talosctl default of false.
  • talos_reset graceful defaults to true (drain workloads, leave etcd). Set false only on unresponsive nodes. system_labels_to_wipe empty = full disk wipe.
  • talos_patch_config defaults dry_run=true; pass dry_run=false + confirm=true to apply.
  • talos_apply_config takes config_file (absolute local path to YAML/JSON, max 1 MiB — secrets never enter context). Defaults dry_run=true, requires exactly one node. Replaces entire machine config — prefer talos_patch_config for targeted changes.
  • talos_read_file / talos_list_files: the TALOS_MCP_ALLOWED_PATHS prefix allowlist is defense-in-depth only. The check runs on the MCP server host and does not resolve symlinks on the remote node — a symlink under an allowed prefix pointing elsewhere is not detected (symlinks are resolved on the node, outside the check's view). Do not rely on it as the sole access control.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
