  • server.py: MCP layer — imports tools.shodan module + init_client(), defines @mcp.tool() wrappers that delegate to the tool functions
  • tools/shodan.py: API layer — standalone functions, module-level _client singleton, try/except error handling
  • tools/shodan.py has no MCP dependency (no from mcp.server import FastMCP)
  • All tools catch shodan.APIError and return {"error": str(e)} instead of raising
  • init_client(api_key) is called once at startup in server.py to set the module-level _client
