CLAUDE.md

claude-octopus CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from nyldn/claude-octopus. It costs 5,420 tokens per session, scanned B, original, MIT.

System guidance for Claude Octopus, including how its multi-AI workflows should report active providers and usage indicators.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when running or maintaining Octopus commands, orchestration scripts, and provider-based workflows.
Why use it?
It keeps workflow output consistent and makes it clearer which AI services are involved and where usage costs come from.

About the project

Claude Octopus is an orchestration project that sends research, design, and coding tasks to Claude Code and other AI model providers so their results can be compared. Developers use it for multi-model work, disagreement detection, reviews, persistent context, and an optional workflow that moves from discovery through delivery. The catalogue entries are its commands, skills, agents, instructions, hooks, plugins, and settings.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.05420 $0.05420
Opus 5 $0.02710 $0.02710
Sonnet 5 $0.01084 $0.01084
Haiku 4.5 $0.00542 $0.00542

Security

Grade B, and why

claude-octopus CLAUDE.md scanned grade B with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

.claude/, .codex/, .gemini/ hold keys, settings and other credentials a mod has no legitimate need for.

Claude Octopus - System Instructions

Note: This file provides context when working directly in the claude-octopus repository. For deployed plugins, visual indicator instructions are embedded in each skill file (flow-discover.md, flow-define.md, flow-develop.md, flow-deliver.md, skill-debate.md).

Visual Indicators (MANDATORY)

When executing Claude Octopus workflows, you MUST display visual indicators so users know which AI providers are active and what costs they're incurring.

Indicator Reference

Indicator Meaning Cost Source
🐙 Claude Octopus multi-AI mode active Multiple APIs
🔴 Codex CLI executing User's OPENAI_API_KEY
🧭 Antigravity CLI executing User's Antigravity access/subscription
🟣 Perplexity Sonar web search User's PERPLEXITY_API_KEY
🔵 Claude subagent processing Included with Claude Code

When to Display Indicators

Display indicators when:

  • Invoking any /octo: command
  • Running orchestrate.sh with any workflow (probe, grasp, tangle, ink, embrace, etc.)
  • User triggers workflow with "octo" prefix ("octo research X", "octo build Y")
  • Executing multi-provider operations

Provider emoji are required in status banners, provider rows, compact banners, and result attribution labels. Narrative prose may use provider names without emoji.

Required Output Format

Before starting a workflow, output this banner:

🐙 **CLAUDE OCTOPUS ACTIVATED** - [Workflow Type]
[Phase Emoji] [Phase Name]: [Brief description of what's happening]

Providers:
🔴 Codex CLI - [Provider's role in this workflow]
🧭 Antigravity CLI - [Provider's role in this workflow]
🔵 Claude - [Your role in this workflow]

Phase emojis by workflow:

  • 🔍 Discover/Probe - Research and exploration
  • 🎯 Define/Grasp - Requirements and scope
  • 🛠️ Develop/Tangle - Implementation
  • ✅ Deliver/Ink - Validation and review
  • 🐙 Debate - Multi-AI deliberation
  • 🐙 Embrace - Full 4-phase workflow

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
