external-secrets-operator: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

external-secrets-operator CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from openshift/external-secrets-operator. It costs 911 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A project instruction file for the External Secrets Operator, a tool that manages secrets for applications running on OpenShift. It records commands for building, testing, checking, and generating project files.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it as a reference when building the operator, running unit, API, or end-to-end tests, linting Go and Markdown, checking dependencies, or regenerating manifests and code.
Why use it?
It gives a coding agent the repository's standard commands instead of requiring it to guess how to validate changes.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00911 $0.00911
Opus 5.5 $0.00364 $0.00364
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00182 $0.00182
Haiku 4.5 $0.00091 $0.00091

Security

Grade A, and why

external-secrets-operator CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Commit Messages

Always include the Jira ticket number, a scope, and a clear imperative description. Format:

<JIRA-ID>: <scope>: short description of the change

Plain colons, no parens — OpenShift CI's jira-lifecycle-plugin maps PRs to Jira via a literal <TICKET>:/NO-JIRA: prefix, which a parenthesized scope would break.

Example: ESO-142: controller: add proxy egress network policy. A scope is always required. The Jira project can be any valid project (ESO, OAPE, etc.). If no Jira ticket exists, ask the user for context, or use NO-JIRA: <scope>: <imperative description> (e.g., NO-JIRA: docs: fix typo in README). Enforced by the commit-msg-jira-prefix pygrep hook in .pre-commit-config.yaml. Never use generic messages like "fix bug", "update code", or "address review comments".

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
