agent-ebpf: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

v2/.github/instructions/vitest-extension-testing.instructions.md

vitest-extension-testing is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from ourobx/agent-ebpf. It costs 909 tokens per session, scanned D, original, MIT.

Instructions for running and understanding Vitest tests in a VS Code extension project. Vitest is a JavaScript and TypeScript test runner, and the instructions cover unit, benchmark, solo, cleanup, and integration tests.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to run extension tests, investigate failures, run performance benchmarks, execute tests that must run alone, and run tests in the VS Code extension host.
Why use it?
It explains which commands and test settings to use and gives fixes for common failures such as missing compiled files, mocked APIs, or display support.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00909 $0.00909
Opus 5 $0.00454 $0.00454
Sonnet 5 $0.00182 $0.00182
Haiku 4.5 $0.00091 $0.00091

Measured 3d ago against content hash 861939fcb22e, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade D, and why

vitest-extension-testing scanned grade D with 2 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Hidden instructionshighPrompt injection

Directives inside HTML comments, invisible characters or bidirectional overrides are read by the model and not by the person reviewing the file.

Vitest Extension Testing

Use when running, debugging, or interpreting Vitest test results in the claude-skills-deployer extension (extension/ directory).

Test File Naming Conventions

Pattern What it tests Run command
*.test.ts Standard unit tests npm test
*.bench.test.ts Latency benchmarks (p95, avg, min/max) npx vitest run src/foo.bench.test.ts
*.solo.test.ts Tests that must not run in parallel npx vitest run --pool=forks src/foo.solo.test.ts
*.prune.test.ts Data cleanup / pruning logic npm test
*.integration.test.ts VS Code Extension Host tests (require xvfb) npm run test:integration

Common Failures and Fixes

Cannot find module 'vscode' Extension tests mock the vscode API. If this fires unexpectedly, check src/test/ for the mock setup.

Cannot find module './foo' Run npm run compile first — the .ts files must be compiled before Vitest can resolve them via the tsconfig paths.

xvfb-run: not found (Linux/WSL)

sudo apt-get install -y xvfb

Bench p95 regression Benchmarks in *.bench.test.ts report min / avg / p95 / max. A p95 regression (>50ms for read_file, >200ms for tools/list) usually indicates blocking I/O or a synchronous loop in the hot path of index.js.

Parallel timeout in *.solo.test.ts These tests must run with --pool=forks to prevent shared state corruption. If they timeout in the default thread pool, run:

npx vitest run --pool=forks src/foo.solo.test.ts

ENOENT on temp dir after test afterAll cleanup with fs.rmSync(dir, { recursive: true, force: true }) — ensure tmpDir is created in beforeAll not at module level.

Run Commands

# All unit tests (fastest feedback loop)
cd extension && npm test

# Single file
npx vitest run src/mcpUsageLog.test.ts

# Benchmark (spawns MCP server subprocess)
npx vitest run src/mcpFilesystemServer.bench.test.ts

# Integration (VS Code Extension Host — requires display)
npm run test:integration # Windows
xvfb-run -a npm run test:integration # Linux/WSL/CI

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
