symbols: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

symbols CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from p1va/symbols. It costs 840 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A repository guide for Symbols, a small bridge that lets coding agents use language servers for code navigation and analysis. It explains the project’s architecture, engineering rules, and key files.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when working on Symbols to understand its TypeScript and pnpm setup, language-server configuration, MCP tools and resources, maintenance guidance, and implementation conventions.
Why use it?
It gives agents the project context they need to make changes that fit the repository and avoid treating it as a broader tool than it is.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00840 $0.00840
Opus 5 $0.00420 $0.00420
Sonnet 5 $0.00168 $0.00168
Haiku 4.5 $0.00084 $0.00084

Measured 6d ago against content hash a33a685df80e, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-06, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

symbols CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Repo Summary

Symbols is a lightweight MCP bridge to Language Servers.

It is intentionally small:

  • skills and plugin assets carry installation and troubleshooting guidance
  • language-servers.yaml is the desired state
  • MCP resources expose effective config and runtime state
  • MCP tools perform navigation, inspection, search, rename, diagnostics, and control-plane actions

Do not treat Symbols as:

  • a managed installer framework
  • a large MCP recipe catalog
  • a broad workflow product with file, shell, or memory tooling

Engineering Preferences

  • TypeScript and pnpm; use the pinned toolchain (nvm use)
  • strict typing and build health matter
  • prefer small modules, explicit data flow, and simple typed helpers
  • prefer a pragmatic blend of functional and imperative style: pure helpers and plain transforms where they stay simple, stateful or imperative structures where they are the clearer fit (lifecycle, stores, plumbing)
  • establish each fact once: coordinate base, URI conversion, normalization, and output limits each have one implementation
  • earn abstractions: a little direct duplication beats a framework with hooks or branching flags
  • keep comments that record constraints the type system cannot express; delete narration and changelog comments

Architecture Contracts

The flow is tools -> preparation -> operations -> session -> client.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
