monica-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

monica-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from philipp-mlr/monica-mcp. It costs 604 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of project instructions for an MCP server that connects agents to Monica, a personal relationship management application. Its tools use actions such as listing, reading, creating, updating, and deleting records.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding or updating contacts, recording activities and notes, managing tasks and reminders, or reading Monica's reference data.
Why use it?
It explains how the server's tools map to Monica's contacts, notes, tasks, reminders, relationships, and other data, so an agent can choose the right operation.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00604 $0.00604
Opus 5 $0.00302 $0.00302
Sonnet 5 $0.00121 $0.00121
Haiku 4.5 $0.00060 $0.00060

Security

Grade A, and why

monica-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

monica-mcp Agent Guide

Architecture

  • 29 action-based tools — one per entity, takes action: "list"|"get"|"create"|"update"|"delete" parameter
  • Full coverage — all 30 Monica API endpoints
  • Design rationale — consolidated from 146 to 29 tools to save ~40K tokens of tool definitions
  • Tested against Monica v4.1.2

Tool Categories

Category Tools Description
Contact monica_contact CRUD + search + tags + career + 15 scoped queries
Communication monica_activity, monica_call, monica_conversation CRUD + message threading
Productivity monica_note, monica_task, monica_reminder, monica_tag, monica_journal_entry Full CRUD
Professional monica_relationship, monica_company, monica_occupation CRUD
Financial monica_gift, monica_debt CRUD + photo association
Reference monica_country, monica_currency, monica_gender, monica_user Read-only

Common Workflows

Add a contact + note + task:

monica_contact(action: "create", first_name: "John", ...)
  → get id
monica_note(action: "create", contact_id: ..., body: "...", is_favorited: 0)
monica_task(action: "create", contact_id: ..., title: "...", completed: 0)

Search for a contact:

monica_contact(action: "search", query: "John")

List what you know about a contact:

monica_contact(action: "list_notes", id: ...)
monica_contact(action: "list_activities", id: ...)
monica_contact(action: "list_relationships", id: ...)

Safety

  • All tools include the action parameter — the AI must explicitly choose delete
  • System env vars: MONICA_READ_ONLY=true blocks writes, MONICA_DISABLE_DELETE=true blocks deletes
  • Countries, currencies, genders are read-only (no create/update/delete)

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
