CLAUDE.md

jf-sebastian CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from pjdoland/jf-sebastian. It costs 5,839 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for J.F. Sebastian, an AI conversation system that gives vintage animatronic toys spoken conversations through speech recognition, ChatGPT and speech synthesis.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when installing dependencies, configuring voice input and output, setting up optional voice conversion, or developing the Teddy Ruxpin conversation system.
Why use it?
They document the required environment and setup, including the specific Python version, macOS audio support and OpenAI key, reducing setup failures.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.05839 $0.05839
Opus 5 $0.02919 $0.02919
Sonnet 5 $0.01168 $0.01168
Haiku 4.5 $0.00584 $0.00584

Security

Grade A, and why

jf-sebastian CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

J.F. Sebastian is an AI-powered animatronic conversation system that brings vintage animatronic toys to life through real-time voice interactions. The system enables personality-driven conversations with ChatGPT through devices like the 1985 Teddy Ruxpin doll, featuring speech recognition, text-to-speech synthesis, and optional voice conversion.

Critical Requirements:

  • Python 3.10.x specifically (RVC dependencies incompatible with 3.11+)
  • macOS environment (currently configured for Mac audio devices)
  • OpenAI API key required for Whisper, GPT-4o-mini, and TTS

Essential Commands

Setup and Installation

# Automated setup (recommended)
./setup.sh

# Manual virtual environment setup
python3 -m venv venv
source venv/bin/activate
pip install --upgrade pip
pip install -r requirements.txt

# Install RVC (optional, requires Python 3.10)
./scripts/install_rvc.sh
# OR manually:
pip install pip==24.0
pip install -r requirements-rvc.txt
pip install --upgrade pip

# Download OpenWakeWord preprocessing models
python3 -c "from openwakeword import utils; utils.download_models(['alexa'])"

# List available audio devices
python -m jf_sebastian.modules.audio_output

Running the Application

# Using convenience script
./run.sh

# Direct execution
python -m jf_sebastian.main

# Supervised (recommended for unattended deployments — auto-restart on crash,
# watchdog kill of hung children, crash reports to ./crash_reports/).
# See scripts/jf-sebastian.plist (macOS) and scripts/jf-sebastian.service (Linux)
# for the production install paths.
HEARTBEAT_FILE=/tmp/jf_sebastian.heartbeat python scripts/supervisor.py

Testing

# Run all tests
pytest tests/

# Run specific test markers
pytest -m unit # Unit tests only
pytest -m integration # Integration tests
pytest -m audio # Audio-related tests
pytest -m slow # Long-running tests

# Run tests with verbose output
pytest -v tests/

# Test specific component
pytest tests/modules/test_state_machine.py
pytest tests/personalities/test_base.py

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
