browser-automation: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

browser-automation CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from PopoverAI/browser-automation. It costs 1,991 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A CLAUDE.md instruction file for a TypeScript browser-automation project. It explains the project, its packaging and runtime setup, and how contributors should decide what work is worthwhile.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to guide development work, understand the local browser-automation service, and follow the project's stated priorities.
Why use it?
It gives a coding agent repository-specific guidance instead of making it infer the project structure and priorities from source files alone.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01991 $0.01991
Opus 5 $0.00996 $0.00996
Sonnet 5 $0.00398 $0.00398
Haiku 4.5 $0.00199 $0.00199

Measured 3d ago against content hash 89f5751f604d, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-12, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

browser-automation CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

@popoverai/browser-automation ships the browser-demo CLI and library: narrated demo videos from agent-browser flows. A steps file (agent-browser commands plus a narration sentence per step) goes in; an mp4 comes out. agent-browser owns the browser (local Chrome, --cdp, or a cloud provider); the AI SDK owns narration; ffmpeg stitches.

It began as a fork of @browserbasehq/mcp-server-browserbase and carried a Stagehand MCP server until agent-browser proved the better agentic interface; that surface was removed (see README "History"). There is no MCP server, no Stagehand, no Browserbase session management, no Docker image.

Single package, no workspace. TypeScript, ESM, Node 22+ (ai@7 sets the floor; agent-browser itself prefers 24 but runs on 22).

What's worth doing

We are a pre-revenue startup. Work earns its place by changing something for a person using the product, or by unblocking work that does.

The common miss is insurance against futures nobody has chosen — portability away from a platform we have no plan to leave, resilience at a scale we have not reached, an abstraction over a second implementation that does not exist. The cost lands now; the benefit waits on a decision no one has made. A working system coupled to its platform is not a problem.

Before proposing work — a fix, a refactor, a ticket, a review finding — name who is affected today, at our scale, on the stack we run. If you can't, report it as an observation rather than a problem.

Layout

  • src/cli.ts — the browser-demo binary: record (default), validate, guide, schema, example
  • src/stepsFile.ts — the steps-file schema (zod/v4), its JSON Schema, and the starter example; the single source of truth for the input format
  • src/agentBrowserClient.ts — spawn-based wrapper over the agent-browser CLI (batch via stdin JSON, stream status/enable/disable)
  • src/agentBrowserRecorder.ts — captures the daemon's viewport stream, runs each step as one agent-browser batch --bail, builds the timeline
  • src/render.ts — per-segment narration + ffmpeg encode, concat; segment length is max(video, audio)
  • src/speech.ts — narration through the AI SDK's generateSpeech, or a pure-JS silent WAV when no speech is configured
  • src/speechProviders.ts — CLI-side --tts <provider[:model]> resolution; openai, elevenlabs, lmnt, hume, deepgram are bundled
  • src/timeline.tsCapturedFrame / TimelineEntry shared types
  • SKILL.md — the agent-facing guide, printed by browser-demo guide; shipped in the package so it always matches the binary
  • tests/ — vitest, one file per subject; ffmpeg and agent-browser are stubbed (an exec seam and a fake stream WebSocket server), speech models are MockSpeechModelV4 from ai/test

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
