skills: Instructions file for Claude Code

AGENTS.md

skills AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode from posit-dev/skills. It costs 1,139 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of repository instructions for coding agents working on Posit's collection of Agent Skills. It explains the repository, its Markdown-based skill files, and utility scripts for checking skill size and stale references.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when editing or reviewing Agent Skills, checking token and line limits, or finding references to old skill names after a rename.
Why use it?
It helps an agent follow the repository's conventions instead of treating it like an ordinary application with code to compile or deploy. It also identifies checks needed after skill-name changes.

Written for Claude Code and Codex and OpenCode: Claude Code plugin machinery, but also the file is AGENTS.md. Also seen: mentions .claude-plugin; mentions Claude Code; mentions AGENTS.md.

This is posit-dev/skills's own configuration. It tells Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode how to work on skills itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything skills configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01139 $0.01139
Opus 5.5 $0.00456 $0.00456
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00228 $0.00228
Haiku 4.5 $0.00114 $0.00114

Security

Grade A, and why

skills AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 20d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

AGENTS.md

This file provides guidance to coding agents (e.g., Posit Assistant, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) when working with code in this repository.

What This Repository Is

A collection of Agent Skills published by Posit PBC. Skills are structured markdown files, following the Agent Skills specification, that teach coding agents specialized workflows (e.g., Shiny app development, R package testing, GitHub PR workflows). There is no application code to build, compile, or deploy — the primary artifacts are Markdown files consumed directly by coding agents that support the Agent Skills format.

Utility Scripts

Two runnable utilities live at the repo root.

count-skill-tokens.py reports line and token counts for a skill:

# Requires uv
./count-skill-tokens.py shiny/shiny-bslib
# or
uv run count-skill-tokens.py r-lib/r-cli

Warns when SKILL.md exceeds 5,000 tokens / 500 lines, or when the skill description frontmatter exceeds 100 tokens.

find-stale-references.py finds references to old skill names after a rename, so stale mentions don't linger in the repo or in users' projects:

# Check the default r-lib r-* prefix renames
./find-stale-references.py [paths...]

# High-confidence path references only (e.g. "r-lib/cli/SKILL.md")
./find-stale-references.py --kinds path

# Check a custom rename
./find-stale-references.py --rename old-name=new-name ~/my-project

Bare name mentions are also reported but need review: the old name may refer to an R package (cli), a website (cli.r-lib.org), or an ordinary word (lifecycle) rather than the skill. Exits non-zero when matches are found, so it can gate CI.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
