rafter-cli: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/copilot-instructions.md

rafter-cli copilot-instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from Raftersecurity/rafter-cli. It costs 424 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for Rafter, a security command-line tool for AI coding agents. It defines the shared specification, Node.js and Python implementations, repository layout, and testing rules.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps maintain commands, scanners, audit logging, configuration, platform setup, documentation, and matching Node.js and Python releases.
Why use it?
It prevents the two implementations from drifting apart and sets rules for validating input and avoiding unsafe code changes.

Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

Written for GitHub Copilot: a Copilot instructions file.

This is Raftersecurity/rafter-cli's own configuration. It tells GitHub Copilot how to work on rafter-cli itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything rafter-cli configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00424 $0.00424
Opus 5 $0.00212 $0.00212
Sonnet 5 $0.00085 $0.00085
Haiku 4.5 $0.00042 $0.00042

Security

Grade A, and why

rafter-cli copilot-instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Rafter CLI — Copilot Instructions

Rafter is a security CLI for AI coding agents. It ships as two feature-identical implementations: Node.js (TypeScript) and Python.

Project Rules

  • Every change must be made in both Node and Python. A single-language PR is incomplete.
  • shared-docs/CLI_SPEC.md is the spec. If CLI behavior changes, update the spec first.
  • Versions must match between node/package.json and python/pyproject.toml.
  • This is a security tool. Minimize dependencies. Never introduce eval, unsanitized template strings, or command injection vectors. Validate all external input at system boundaries.

Directory Layout

  • node/src/commands/ — CLI commands (commander.js)
  • node/src/core/ — Command interceptor, audit logger, config manager
  • node/src/scanners/ — Betterleaks integration + regex-based secret scanner
  • node/src/commands/agent/init.ts — Per-platform installation logic (8 platforms)
  • python/rafter_cli/ — Mirrors the Node structure with typer
  • shared-docs/CLI_SPEC.md — Canonical output contracts and exit codes
  • recipes/ — Copy-paste setup guides per platform
  • vscode/ — VS Code extension

Testing

  • Node: Vitest (cd node && pnpm test)
  • Python: pytest (cd python && pytest)
  • Tests must pass in both before merging

Key Patterns

  • Commands export a createXCommand() factory (Node) or use @app.command() decorators (Python)
  • Scanners use dual-engine: Betterleaks binary first, regex fallback. Patterns defined in secret-patterns.ts / secret_patterns.py
  • Risk classification: critical > high > medium > low
  • Audit log: JSONL format, append-only, documented schema in CLI_SPEC.md
  • MCP server: 4 tools + 3 resources over stdio transport
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
