ai-engineering-fluency: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/instructions/jetbrains-plugin.instructions.md

ai-engineering-fluency jetbrains-plugin.instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from rajbos/ai-engineering-fluency. It costs 671 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Development guidance for a JetBrains plug-in, an add-on for IntelliJ-based editors such as IntelliJ IDEA. It explains how the Kotlin host reuses shared web panels and a command-line program while preserving their data format.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when building the plug-in, connecting its host to shared panels or command-line commands, or checking that it remains installable in supported JetBrains editors.
Why use it?
It prevents duplicated interface code and compatibility breaks across the JetBrains family of editors.

Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

Written for GitHub Copilot: a Copilot instructions file.

This is rajbos/ai-engineering-fluency's own configuration. It tells GitHub Copilot how to work on ai-engineering-fluency itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything ai-engineering-fluency configures →

Needs its repository: it reads a path above its own folder, which exists only inside the repository. The line is ../build.ps1 -Project jetbrains.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00671 $0.00671
Opus 5.5 $0.00268 $0.00268
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00134 $0.00134
Haiku 4.5 $0.00067 $0.00067

Measured yesterday against content hash 5c9683387971, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

ai-engineering-fluency jetbrains-plugin.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

JetBrains Plugin — Coding Agent Instructions

This sub-project is a Kotlin / IntelliJ Platform plugin that mirrors the architecture of visualstudio-extension/: a thin host shell that reuses the webview bundles from vscode-extension/ and the CLI binary from cli/.

Hard rules

  • Do not duplicate UI logic. Anything visual belongs in the shared webview bundles (vscode-extension/src/webview/...). The Kotlin code is only allowed to host the bundle, push stats into it, and react to postMessage events coming back.
  • Do not modify vscode-shim.js from this project. The shim lives in visualstudio-extension/src/AIEngineeringFluency/WebBridge/vscode-shim.js and is shared. Changes there must keep both extensions working.
  • Do not break the JSON contract between CliBridge and the webview bundles. The CLI commands and their --json shape are the integration point — kept identical to the VS extension's Data/CliBridge.cs.
  • Stay in com.intellij.modules.platform. Adding any IDE-specific module (e.g. com.intellij.java) breaks installation in the rest of the JetBrains family. If you need a feature that's only in some IDEs, gate it via PluginId.findId(...) at runtime.
  • Never commit bundled assets. The webview/*.js, vscode-shim.js, and cli-bundle/** files are reproduced by the build (prepareBundledAssets task). They are gitignored on purpose.

Build & test commands

# Full pipeline (rebuilds vscode webviews + CLI + plugin zip)
../build.ps1 -Project jetbrains

# Plugin-only commands
./gradlew buildPlugin # produces build/distributions/*.zip
./gradlew runIde # sandbox IDE for manual testing
./gradlew test # JUnit 5 tests
./gradlew verifyPlugin # marketplace API-compatibility verifier

./gradlew requires JDK 21+ on PATH. Gradle itself is downloaded by the wrapper on first run; do not commit a global Gradle config.

Coding style

  • Kotlin 2.x, idiomatic Kotlin (no Java-style getters/setters).
  • Use Logger.getInstance(SomeClass::class.java) (or thisLogger()) for logging — never println.
  • Long-running work (CLI spawn, file I/O) goes on ApplicationManager.getApplication().executeOnPooledThread { }. UI updates back on invokeLater { }.
  • JCEF interop is single-threaded on the EDT; never call executeJavaScript from a pooled thread.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
