ai-engineering-fluency: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/instructions/visualstudio-extension.instructions.md

ai-engineering-fluency visualstudio-extension.instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from rajbos/ai-engineering-fluency. It costs 817 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Development guidance for a Visual Studio extension, a plug-in that adds features to Microsoft's Visual Studio editor. It describes hosting existing web panels in WebView2, a browser component built into Windows, and connecting them to C# code.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when building, testing, or changing the Visual Studio plug-in, its web panels, session data access, or setup requirements.
Why use it?
It gives contributors a shared architecture and workflow instead of requiring them to redesign the interface or guess how the extension's data flows.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00817 $0.00817
Opus 5.5 $0.00327 $0.00327
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00163 $0.00163
Haiku 4.5 $0.00082 $0.00082

Security

Grade A, and why

ai-engineering-fluency visualstudio-extension.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Visual Studio Extension — Architecture & Development Guide

The visualstudio-extension/ folder contains a C# Visual Studio extension (.vsix) that replicates the core views of the VS Code extension for users of Visual Studio IDE.

Planned Approach (Option C — WebView2 + existing webviews)

The extension hosts a WebView2 control inside a Visual Studio Tool Window (C# AsyncPackage). The existing compiled webview bundles from vscode-extension/dist/webview/ run inside WebView2 — avoiding a full UI rewrite. A thin C# bridge handles file I/O and passes JSON to the webview via PostWebMessageAsJson.

Key design decisions

  • Data layer: The VisualStudioDataAccess class in src/visualstudio.ts already handles all session discovery and parsing for Visual Studio Copilot Chat binary session files (MessagePack format). The C# host reads session metadata and delegates token estimation to this layer by shelling out to the CLI, or by re-implementing only the discovery logic in C#.
  • UI: WebView2 renders the existing details, chart, usage, and diagnostics webview bundles. The VS Code CSS theme tokens (--vscode-*) will need a compatibility shim mapping to Visual Studio theme tokens.
  • No cloud storage: Azure Storage integration is out of scope for the initial version.

Developer Workflow

# Prerequisites: Visual Studio 2022, .NET SDK, VSIX workload
cd visualstudio-extension
dotnet build --configuration Release

Or from the repo root:

./build.ps1 -Project visualstudio

Build Validation

VSIX projects require Visual Studio's MSBuild toolchain — not dotnet build.

Correct way: use build.ps1

Always build the VS extension via the root orchestrator:

# From the repo root:
./build.ps1 -Project visualstudio

This uses vswhere.exe to locate the correct MSBuild.exe from the Visual Studio install. Running dotnet build against the .csproj directly always fails with:

error MSB4018: The "GenerateResourceAndCtoFileManifests" task failed unexpectedly.

That error is a dotnet build / VSSDK incompatibility, not a code error — ignore it if seen.

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
