orionbelt-semantic-layer-mcp: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

orionbelt-semantic-layer-mcp AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from ralforion/orionbelt-semantic-layer-mcp. It costs 1,627 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

Contributor instructions for a small MCP server that forwards requests to the OrionBelt Semantic Layer REST API. REST is a web interface for sending requests to a service; the server itself contains no semantic engine or business logic.

In plain words
What is it for?
Understanding the server architecture, running its tests and linter, formatting code, installing hooks, and running it locally.
Why use it?
It explains where the real behavior lives and gives contributors the commands and rules needed to change and release the wrapper safely.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01627 $0.01627
Opus 5 $0.00813 $0.00813
Sonnet 5 $0.00325 $0.00325
Haiku 4.5 $0.00163 $0.00163

Security

Grade A, and why

orionbelt-semantic-layer-mcp AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What this is

A thin MCP server that wraps the OrionBelt Semantic Layer (OBSL) REST API. It contains no semantic engine and no business logic — every tool delegates over HTTP to the API and formats the response. All meaning lives in the API repo, which is the source of truth for endpoints, schemas, and behavior:

  • API repo: ../orionbelt-semantic-layer (GitHub: ralforion/orionbelt-semantic-layer)

The entire implementation is a single module, server.py (~3k lines). Tests live in tests/test_server.py. The hatch build ships only server.py.

Commands

uv run pytest # full suite
uv run pytest tests/test_server.py::NAME # single test (NAME = test function or Class::method)
uv run pytest -q -k SUBSTRING # filter by name substring
uv run ruff check . # lint (must be clean before done)
uv run ruff format server.py tests/ # format
./scripts/setup-hooks.sh # install pre-commit hooks (runs ruff)
uv run server.py # run locally (reads .env; see .env.example)

Tests mock the API with respx (httpx interception) and pytest-asyncio in auto mode — they never hit a live API. When changing an endpoint call, update its respx mock in the same test.

Architecture (the non-obvious parts)

Delegation layer. Tools call thin request helpers, never httpx directly: _api_request (base, with one-shot retry on session expiry) → _session_request (multi-model, prefixes /v1/sessions/{id}/models/{mid}) and _shortcut_request (single-model, top-level /v1/...). _parse_json / _raise_api_error normalize responses and surface API error detail as ToolError.

Two API modes, detected once at startup via GET /v1/settings (_detect_api_mode), then frozen:

  • single-model — the API has one pre-loaded model; tools hit shortcut routes (/v1/schema, /v1/query/execute, …) and model_id is implicit.
  • multi-model — tools operate on session-scoped routes and take a model_id; sessions are auto-created (_ensure_session) and deleted on shutdown.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
