kubectl.nvim: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

kubectl.nvim CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from Ramilito/kubectl.nvim. It costs 1,542 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A repository instruction document for kubectl.nvim, a Neovim plugin for working with Kubernetes, a system for running containerised applications. It requires planning and the use of specialised helper agents for different areas of the code.

In plain words
What is it for?
Guiding work on Rust, Lua, key mappings, logs, language-server features, status displays, and Kubernetes resource lineage.
Why use it?
It keeps changes aligned with the repository's required review process and domain-specific rules.

Written for Claude Code: the file is CLAUDE.md. Also seen: reads .claude/ paths; mentions CLAUDE.md; mentions subagents.

This is Ramilito/kubectl.nvim's own configuration. It tells Claude Code how to work on kubectl.nvim itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything kubectl.nvim configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01542 $0.01542
Opus 5 $0.00771 $0.00771
Sonnet 5 $0.00308 $0.00308
Haiku 4.5 $0.00154 $0.00154

Security

Grade A, and why

kubectl.nvim CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Subagents

This project uses Claude Code subagents (.claude/agents/). You MUST use them.

Rule 1: ALWAYS Plan First

For ANY non-trivial task, invoke the plan subagent FIRST before doing anything else.

  • Trivial = single obvious edit, typo fix, or direct question
  • Everything else = use plan first

Rule 2: ALWAYS Use Domain Subagents

When a task touches a domain, use that subagent. No exceptions.

Domain Subagent Trigger
Rust code rust ANY task involving kubectl-client/, telemetry, Tokio, mlua, Go FFI
Lua code lua ANY task involving lua/kubectl/, Neovim API, plugin code
Keymappings keymappings ANY task involving adding, modifying, or removing keybindings
Pod logs logs ANY task involving log streaming, LogSession, histogram
LSP lsp ANY task involving completion, hover, diagnostics
Statusline statusline ANY task involving statusline metrics or display
Lineage lineage ANY task involving resource lineage, relationship graphs, owner references
Testing testing ANY task involving writing tests, test infrastructure, mini.test

Rule 3: Use Verification Subagents

Subagent When
code-review After writing/editing code, before commits
architecture-verify To check dependency rules and patterns

Reference Subagents (read-only)

Subagent Purpose
clean-code Clean code principles and patterns
architecture Architecture contract and dependency rules

Project Overview

kubectl.nvim is a Neovim plugin that provides a vim-like interface for browsing and managing Kubernetes clusters. It renders kubectl output in interactive buffers with hierarchical navigation, colors, sorting, and contextual actions.

Multi-language architecture:

  • Lua (lua/kubectl/) - Plugin UI, keybindings, state management, Neovim integration
  • Rust (kubectl-client/) - Performance-critical Kubernetes client, resource processing, metrics
  • Go (go/) - Specialized kubectl operations compiled as C archive and linked into Rust

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
