awesome-copilot-mcp: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/copilot-instructions.md

awesome-copilot-mcp copilot-instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from RbBtSn0w/awesome-copilot-mcp. It costs 2,020 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository guidance for an MCP server, a program that lets AI agents access defined tools and prompts. It describes the server's searchable index, metadata generation, transports, and required compliance with the MCP specification.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when developing or maintaining this MCP server, generating its metadata index, choosing its communication transport, or checking tool and prompt schemas.
Why use it?
It gives developers a shared map of the codebase and helps keep server behavior and data generation consistent with the project's rules. It also distinguishes generated metadata from the source files that produce it.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.02020 $0.02020
Opus 5 $0.01010 $0.01010
Sonnet 5 $0.00404 $0.00404
Haiku 4.5 $0.00202 $0.00202

Measured 8d ago against content hash 9a24950551c1, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-08, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

awesome-copilot-mcp copilot-instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Copilot / AI Agent Instructions — awesome-copilot-mcp

Short, focused guidance to help an AI coding agent be productive in this repository.

Big picture

  • This project implements an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that exposes a searchable index of "agents", "prompts", "instructions", "skills" and "collections". See src/mcp-server.ts for the server bootstrap and transport choices (stdio vs HTTP).
  • Index data is produced by a metadata generator and written to .metadata.json at the repo root. This repository uses scripts/generate-metadata.js (invoked via npm run generate-metadata) to create the index; that script accepts flags such as --local-repo, --verify, and --check-updates. See scripts/generate-metadata.js and the generate-metadata npm script in package.json for details.

MCP compliance (required)

  • All design decisions, tool/prompt schemas, transports, and server behaviors MUST strictly follow the official MCP specification and patterns. Reference: https://modelcontextprotocol.io/docs/learn/server-concepts#how-prompts-work
  • In particular, ensure transport selection (Stdio vs Streamable HTTP), tool capability descriptors, input/output schemas, streaming (SSE) semantics, and error/abort handling match the MCP docs. When in doubt, prefer compatibility with the SDK usage shown in src/mcp-server.ts (Server, StdioServerTransport) and follow the SDK types for Tool/Prompt definitions.

Key components & where to look

  • Server bootstrap: src/mcp-server.ts — constructs MCPTools and MCPPrompts, registers handlers.
  • Tools (exposed actions): src/mcp-tools.ts — defines tool names, input schemas, handleTool dispatch and search/load implementations.
  • Prompts: src/mcp-prompts.ts — prompt definitions used by MCPPrompts.
  • GitHub integration & caching: src/github-adapter.ts — fetches index/content and provides fetchIndex() used by MCPTools.
  • CLI entrypoint / dist: dist/cli.js (built from src/cli.ts) — package bin awesome-copilot-mcp runs this.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
