insights-mcp: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

insights-mcp AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from RedHatInsights/insights-mcp. It costs 2,746 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

Project instructions for Insights MCP, a server that connects AI coding assistants to Red Hat Insights services. They describe its architecture, authentication, service toolsets, and supported connection methods.

In plain words
What is it for?
Guiding development in the Insights MCP codebase, including its server, Red Hat API client, authentication, and selectable toolsets.
Why use it?
They give an assistant the repository-specific rules and structure needed to make informed changes without guessing how the server works.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.02746 $0.02746
Opus 5 $0.01373 $0.01373
Sonnet 5 $0.00549 $0.00549
Haiku 4.5 $0.00275 $0.00275

Security

Grade A, and why

insights-mcp AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Insights MCP - AI Coding Assistant Guide

This document provides AI coding assistants with specific guidance for working with the Insights MCP codebase. Start by reading README.md for project overview, authentication setup, and client integrations.

This guide supplements the README with development-specific information and workflow guidance for AI coding assistants.

Architecture

Core Components

  1. InsightsMCPServer (src/insights_mcp/server.py)

    • Main unified server that mounts multiple service toolsets
    • Handles authentication and configuration for all mounted toolsets
    • Supports selective toolset registration via --toolset argument
  2. InsightsMCP Base Class (src/insights_mcp/mcp.py)

    • Abstract base class for all Insights MCP toolsets
    • Manages authentication and client initialization
    • Provides common functionality for Red Hat Insights API integration
  3. InsightsClient (src/insights_mcp/client.py)

    • HTTP client for Red Hat Insights APIs with OAuth2 support
    • Handles service account and refresh token authentication
    • Provides error handling and proxy support
  4. OAuth Middleware (src/insights_mcp/oauth.py)

    • Starlette middleware for OAuth flows in HTTP/SSE transports
    • Dynamic client registration and metadata proxying

Toolset Architecture

The project uses a toolset-based architecture where each service is implemented as a separate toolset:

Toolset Implementation Pattern:

  • Most toolsets: src/<toolset_name>_mcp/server.py (e.g., src/vulnerability_mcp/server.py)
  • Legacy pattern: src/insights_mcp/servers/<name>.py (e.g., example toolset)

Example toolsets (see src/insights_mcp/toolsets.py MCPS list for complete current list):

  • image-builder (src/image_builder_mcp/server.py): Linux image building tools
  • vulnerability (src/vulnerability_mcp/server.py): Security vulnerability management
  • inventory (src/inventory_mcp/server.py): System inventory management

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
