unofficial-HackerNews-MCP-CLI: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

unofficial-HackerNews-MCP-CLI AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from Riddhimaan-Senapati/unofficial-HackerNews-MCP-CLI. It costs 915 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for coding agents working on an unofficial Hacker News client. Hacker News is a technology-news site, and the client provides a terminal command and an MCP server to access its official API.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when an agent must understand or modify this Hacker News client, its API layer, data models, command-line interface, or MCP tools.
Why use it?
It gives agents the project structure, shared data rules, and change guidelines they need before editing code. This helps keep the terminal interface and server interface consistent.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00915 $0.00915
Opus 5 $0.00458 $0.00458
Sonnet 5 $0.00183 $0.00183
Haiku 4.5 $0.00092 $0.00092

Measured 5d ago against content hash 025a1102f3dd, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-10, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

unofficial-HackerNews-MCP-CLI AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What this is

A read-only client for the official HackerNews API. One shared async client backs two entry points:

  • hn, a Typer CLI (src/hn/cli.py) for the terminal.
  • hn-mcp, a FastMCP server (src/hn/server.py) that exposes the same operations as MCP tools.

The layers, in order:

  • src/hn/client.py owns every network call. Keep the CLI and the server thin over it, so the two interfaces never drift. It handles the bounded concurrency and the API's null sentinel for missing resources.
  • src/hn/models.py holds the Pydantic models. StoryCategory is the single source of truth for the six story lists (its endpoint stem, display title, and story-list cap). Add a category or a model field here, not in each interface.
  • src/hn/cli.py and src/hn/server.py do formatting and wire-up only.
  • skills/hackernews/SKILL.md is the agent-facing skill. It is the source of truth. The copies under .claude/skills/ and .agents/skills/ are local installs from the skills CLI; edit the source, not the copies. The root skills-lock.json records that install.

The tools and CLI are read-only by design. The API has no authentication and no rate limit. Timestamps are Unix epoch seconds. The title, text, and about fields contain HTML.

Commands

uv sync # install dependencies
uv run hn stories top # run the CLI
uv run hn-mcp # run the MCP server
uv run ruff check . # lint
uv run ruff format . # format (`ruff format --check .` in CI)
uv run pytest # tests, every API call mocked with respx
uv build # build dist/ artifacts (gitignored)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
