rockfish-mcp CLAUDE.md

rockfish-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for coding agents from Rockfish-Data/rockfish-mcp. It costs 1,337 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of Claude Code instructions for developing the Rockfish MCP server. It documents setup, locked Python dependencies, environment variables, and how to run the server.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when installing or developing the server, configuring Rockfish and optional Manta access, or starting it locally.
Why use it?
It gives developers the required Python version, virtual-environment steps, package source, and API settings needed to work on the project.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01337 $0.01337
Opus 5 $0.00668 $0.00668
Sonnet 5 $0.00267 $0.00267
Haiku 4.5 $0.00134 $0.00134

Measured 4d ago against content hash 6c8dd24f6bae, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-05, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

rockfish-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Development Commands

Installation and Setup

IMPORTANT: Always use a virtual environment. Python 3.11 is recommended (SDK requires 3.12 or below).

python3.11 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate # On macOS/Linux

# Install in development mode with dev dependencies (includes black and isort)
pip install -e ".[dev]" --find-links https://packages.rockfish.ai

# OR install from requirements.txt (exact locked versions)
pip install -r requirements.txt

Important: The Rockfish SDK is hosted at https://packages.rockfish.ai. The requirements.txt uses --find-links https://packages.rockfish.ai to resolve it.

Environment Setup

Required in a .env file at the project root:

  • ROCKFISH_API_KEY: API key (required)
  • ROCKFISH_API_URL: Defaults to https://api.rockfish.ai
  • ROCKFISH_ORGANIZATION_ID: Falls back to the account default if unset
  • ROCKFISH_PROJECT_ID: Falls back to the account default if unset
  • MANTA_API_URL: Enables Manta tools when set (e.g. https://manta.rockfish.ai)
cp .env.example .env

Running the Server

python -m rockfish_mcp.server
# or
rockfish-mcp

Code Formatting

isort src/rockfish_mcp/ && black src/rockfish_mcp/

# Check only
isort --check-only src/rockfish_mcp/ && black --check src/rockfish_mcp/

Running Tests

The test suite has two tiers:

Unit tests — no credentials required, run locally:

pytest tests/test_manta_client.py tests/test_manta_tools.py

Integration tests — require a .env file with real credentials:

# Run all tests against the default .env
pytest tests/

# Target a specific environment file
pytest tests/ --env=.env.staging.local

# Run a specific test
pytest tests/test_list_resources.py::TestListResources::test_list_databases

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
