unraid-management-agent: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/instructions/collectors.instructions.md

unraid-management-agent collectors.instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from ruaan-deysel/unraid-management-agent. It costs 412 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project-specific instructions for Go programs that collect system data repeatedly and publish it to an internal event channel.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when adding or changing collectors, collection intervals, event publication, startup registration or shutdown handling.
Why use it?
They define how collectors should run, recover from crashes, stop cleanly and register themselves, preventing one failed collection from taking down the service.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00412 $0.00412
Opus 5 $0.00206 $0.00206
Sonnet 5 $0.00082 $0.00082
Haiku 4.5 $0.00041 $0.00041

Security

Grade A, and why

unraid-management-agent collectors.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Collector Instructions

Reference: AGENTS.md for full project context.

Pattern

Every collector is an independent goroutine that:

  1. Runs at a fixed interval (defined in daemon/constants/const.go)
  2. Collects data from system sources (native APIs or shell commands)
  3. Publishes results to the PubSub event bus via ctx.Hub.Pub(data, topic)

Panic Recovery (Required)

All collector loops MUST wrap work in defer/recover:

func (c *Collector) Start(ctx context.Context, interval time.Duration) {
    func() {
        defer func() {
            if r := recover(); r != nil {
                logger.Error("Collector PANIC on startup: %v", r)
            }
        }()
        c.Collect()
    }()

    ticker := time.NewTicker(interval)
    defer ticker.Stop()
    for {
        select {
        case <-ctx.Done():
            return
        case <-ticker.C:
            func() {
                defer func() {
                    if r := recover(); r != nil {
                        logger.Error("Collector PANIC in loop: %v", r)
                    }
                }()
                c.Collect()
            }()
        }
    }
}

Registration

Register new collectors in collector_manager.go RegisterAllCollectors().

Intervals

Intervals are optimized for power efficiency. Do not lower intervals without considering CPU/power impact. See the collector table in AGENTS.md for current values.

Native APIs Preferred

Use native Go libraries over shell commands where possible:

  • Docker: github.com/moby/moby/client
  • VMs: github.com/digitalocean/go-libvirt
  • System: Direct /proc, /sys access

Hardware Compatibility

Different hardware produces different output formats. Add fallback logic when parsing command output (GPU metrics, disk controllers, UPS tools, DMI data).

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
