.github/instructions/sql.instructions.md

caddis-plugin sql.instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from saajunaid/caddis-plugin. It costs 3,141 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of SQL Server coding conventions and guidelines. SQL Server is Microsoft's database system for storing and querying structured data.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when working on SQL Server queries, database code, or related changes that must follow the supplied conventions.
Why use it?
It gives coding agents project-specific rules to follow when writing or reviewing SQL Server code.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.03141 $0.03141
Opus 5.5 $0.01256 $0.01256
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00628 $0.00628
Haiku 4.5 $0.00314 $0.00314

Security

Grade A, and why

caddis-plugin sql.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

SQL Server Standards

Query Externalization (CRITICAL)

All SQL queries that fetch data from the database MUST be externalized to the query config file path defined in project-config.md.

Do NOT:

  • Write inline SQL in Python code
  • Perform aggregations (COUNT, SUM, GROUP BY) in Python when database can do it
  • Fetch all rows and filter in memory
# ✅ CORRECT: Define query in queries.yaml
workbasket_distribution_filtered:
  description: "Count cases by WorkbasketHeading with date filter"
  entity: pega_cases
  sql: |
    SELECT
      ISNULL(WorkbasketHeading, 'Unknown') AS workbasket_heading,
      COUNT(*) AS count
    FROM {table}
    WHERE [Created Date Time] >= ? AND [Created Date Time] < ?
    GROUP BY WorkbasketHeading
    ORDER BY count DESC
# ✅ CORRECT: Call externalized query from repository
def get_workbasket_distribution(self):
    return self._execute_distribution_query(
        section="home_charts",
        query_name="workbasket_distribution_filtered"
    )

# ❌ WRONG: Inline SQL with Python aggregation
df = adapter.execute_query("SELECT * FROM L7DCases")
result = df.groupby("WorkbasketHeading").size()  # Never do this!

When to use in-memory processing:

  • JSON file data (not in database)
  • Post-processing already-returned SQL results (formatting, labeling)
  • Combining results from multiple cached queries

⚠️ YAML Query Template Gotchas

Queries in queries.yaml use {table} placeholders via Python str.format(). This creates two traps:

Trap 1: Curly braces in SQL (e.g., JSON functions) must be double-escaped: {{ and }}

# ❌ BAD: Single braces interpreted as format() placeholders → KeyError
sql: |
  SELECT JSON_VALUE(data, '$.status') FROM {table}

# ✅ GOOD: Double-escape literal SQL curly braces
sql: |
  SELECT JSON_VALUE(data, '$[0]."status"') FROM {table}

Trap 2: Every query entry MUST include an entity: key that maps to the table configuration:

# ✅ CORRECT: entity key present → table name resolved from config
workbasket_distribution:
  description: "Count by workbasket"
  entity: pega_cases              # ← REQUIRED
  sql: |
    SELECT WorkbasketHeading, COUNT(*) AS count
    FROM {table}
    GROUP BY WorkbasketHeading

# ❌ WRONG: Missing entity key → KeyError at runtime
workbasket_distribution:
  description: "Count by workbasket"
  sql: |
    SELECT WorkbasketHeading, COUNT(*) FROM {table}

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
