TheCleaners: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

TheCleaners AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from SamErde/TheCleaners. It costs 872 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Contributor and coding instructions for TheCleaners, a PowerShell project that cleans or inspects Windows, IIS, and Exchange environments. They define supported PowerShell versions, testing boundaries, and safety restrictions.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when changing TheCleaners code, release work, PowerShell commands, cleanup previews, or tests involving Windows, IIS, or Exchange scenarios.
Why use it?
They prevent development work from touching real user or server data and restrict potentially destructive cleanup behavior. They also set rules for code style, previews, and acceptance testing.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00872 $0.00872
Opus 5.5 $0.00349 $0.00349
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00174 $0.00174
Haiku 4.5 $0.00087 $0.00087

Security

Grade A, and why

TheCleaners AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 24d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

TheCleaners contributor and agent contract

Read docs/release-plan-1.0.md before changing behavior. It is the implementation ledger, not a claim that every feature is finished. Follow .github/copilot-instructions.md for PowerShell style: approved verbs, PascalCase, OTBS, help, explicit error handling, and tests.

Safety invariants

  • Windows PowerShell 5.1 is the minimum. Support Microsoft-supported PowerShell 7 releases on Windows; do not introduce newer syntax into runtime code.
  • Never run a cleaner against real user, Windows, IIS, or Exchange data during development. Use isolated fixture paths or mocks. Server acceptance requires a disposable lab and recorded evidence.
  • IIS and Exchange are structurally preview-only until their product-specific gates pass. Require explicit -WhatIf before discovery. No deletion command, native deletion call, generic deletion helper, force flag, preference override, or persistent activation is permitted in either preview implementation.
  • The tentative later-minor Exchange -AllowRemoval design is per invocation, not an activation setting. Do not add it in the 1.0 work or describe it as a finalized permanent contract.
  • Public cleanup commands own mutations. The legacy Remove-OldFiles wrapper and its tests are retired; never reintroduce a generic mutation layer or add new callers to that retired contract.
  • Temp directory removal requires -RemoveEmptyDirectory. Only prune directories emptied by that invocation and their now-empty ancestors. Preserve roots, unrelated empty branches, recent files, and reparse points.
  • Temp candidate deletion must be file-specific and bound to an opened file object. Do not reintroduce provider Remove-Item for candidate files; a missing candidate must be skipped, and a directory substitution must never be deleted or counted as a successful file removal.
  • Every mutation must be covered by the owning command's ShouldProcess decision. Never weaken WhatIf/Confirm tests to make a refactor pass.
  • Discovery failure is not an empty successful result. Report failures through PowerShell's error stream and honor -ErrorAction Stop.
  • Module import must be quiet, deterministic, and free of caller-scope initialization.
  • Do not mark commands stable, merge a release, create a release tag, or publish to the Gallery without the applicable gates and maintainer approval.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
