ape-adventure: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

ape-adventure AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from SarutobiSasuke8/ape-adventure. It costs 466 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for Ape Escape, a small Pygame game, covering shared rules for AI agents that modify its code. They define file, dependency, gameplay, persistence, and verification requirements.

In plain words
What is it for?
Editing the single gameplay file, preserving the game's controls and progression, maintaining local JSON save data, making small changes, and checking the result with Python's compile check.
Why use it?
They keep changes consistent with the existing game and reduce the risk of removing mechanics, adding unsupported dependencies, or handing back code that does not compile.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00466 $0.00466
Opus 5 $0.00233 $0.00233
Sonnet 5 $0.00093 $0.00093
Haiku 4.5 $0.00047 $0.00047

Security

Grade A, and why

ape-adventure AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

AGENTS.md — Generic AI Agent Rules

For any AI agent (Codex, Cursor, Aider, Continue, etc.) contributing to Ape Escape. Claude-specific guidance lives in CLAUDE.md; treat that as authoritative if there's any conflict.

Hard rules

  1. One file. All gameplay code stays in ape_escape.py.
  2. pygame only. No new dependencies in requirements.txt.
  3. No bundled assets. No images, fonts, or audio files shipped.
  4. Compile clean. py -m py_compile ape_escape.py must pass before handing back any change.
  5. No silent feature deletion. If you remove or rename a mechanic, call it out clearly in your reply.

Soft rules (defaults — override only with explicit instruction)

  • Keep the existing palette and visual language. New colors go in the palette block at the top of the file.
  • Keep the title text "APE ESCAPE" and the rescue text "HOW HIGH WILL YOU CLIMB?".
  • Keep 60fps target, 3 lives, one-hit barrel deaths.
  • Keep persistence in a single local JSON file.

Workflow expectations

  • Make small, reviewable changes — one mechanic or one polish pass at a time.
  • After editing, mentally walk the game loop: title → start → climb → death → respawn → rescue → next level.
  • Flag anything that might impact frame rate (particle counts, per-frame surface allocations, large blits).
  • For meaningful sessions, follow the session-report flow in docs/SESSION_REPORTING.md. For the current Ape Adventure package, CLAUDE.md remains authoritative.

Out of scope

  • Multiplayer, networking, accounts, leaderboards beyond local JSON.
  • Real-money or wallet integrations.
  • Pixel-art rendering, CRT shaders, or retro filters.
  • Switching engines (Phaser, Godot, etc.) — this is and remains a pygame project.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
