bruin: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

bruin CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from sawzhang/bruin. It costs 1,904 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A development guide for Bruin, a desktop application with a Rust backend, React frontend, SQLite database, and built-in MCP server. MCP lets AI assistants communicate with software through a standard interface.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to develop Bruin, run frontend tests, check or lint its Rust code, build the desktop package, or install and configure its MCP server for Claude Code.
Why use it?
It collects the commands for starting, building, testing, and checking both sides of the application. It also explains how data moves between the AI agent, app, database, and interface.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01904 $0.01904
Opus 5 $0.00952 $0.00952
Sonnet 5 $0.00381 $0.00381
Haiku 4.5 $0.00190 $0.00190

Measured 7d ago against content hash 408ac0bb874c, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

bruin CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Architecture

Bruin is a Tauri 2 desktop app: Rust backend + React 19 frontend with a native MCP server built into the app binary.

Data flow

AI Agent ──MCP (stdio)──► Bruin Binary (Rust) ──► SQLite ◄──IPC──► React Frontend
                                                      │
                                                 iCloud Sync
                                              (bidirectional .md files)

The MCP server runs as the same binary with --mcp flag: bruin --mcp. It accesses SQLite directly — no Node.js required. The GUI app and MCP server share the same database at ~/Library/Application Support/com.bruin.notes/bruin.db.

Frontend (src/)

  • IPC bridge: src/lib/tauri.ts — every Tauri invoke() call is wrapped here. Stores never call invoke() directly.
  • State: Zustand stores in src/stores/noteStore, workspaceStore, graphStore, tagStore, activityStore, uiStore. Each store calls functions from tauri.ts and manages its own slice.
  • Editor: TipTap-based rich markdown editor in src/components/editor/.
  • Graph: D3 force-directed visualization in src/components/graph/.
  • Themes: 6 themes defined in src/lib/themes.ts, applied via CSS variables with Tailwind's bear.* namespace.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
