decompose: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

decompose CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from sciyoshi/decompose. It costs 2,434 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

Instructions for Decompose, a local development process manager. It starts and stops native programs from a YAML configuration, similar to Docker Compose but without running containers.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to start, stop, inspect, and view logs for configured local services, including separate named sessions when multiple environments are needed.
Why use it?
It gives developers one way to manage several local services and keep separate development environments apart. Background processes, logs, status, and shutdown can be handled through one command-line interface.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.02434 $0.02434
Opus 5.5 $0.00974 $0.00974
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00487 $0.00487
Haiku 4.5 $0.00243 $0.00243

Security

Grade A, and why

decompose CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Decompose

A simple process orchestrator for local development. Broadly compatible with Docker Compose CLI and YAML semantics, but runs native processes instead of containers.

Design

  • Daemon architecture: decompose up spawns a background daemon per project. The daemon manages process lifecycles and communicates via local socket IPC (using the interprocess crate). The CLI is a thin client that sends JSON requests over the socket.
  • Instance identity: Each environment is identified by a SHA-256 hash of the config directory + file set, or by an explicit --session name (used verbatim as the ID; [A-Za-z0-9_-], max 64 chars). This allows multiple isolated environments and cross-tab targeting.
  • XDG paths: Sockets go to $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/decompose/, state (pid, log) goes to $XDG_STATE_HOME/decompose/, with sensible fallbacks.

CLI

Goal: broad compatibility with docker compose commands. The main commands should feel familiar to Docker Compose users.

decompose [--file FILE...] [--session NAME] [-e ENV_FILE...] [--disable-dotenv] <command>

decompose up [-d] [--wait] [--foreground] [--no-deps] [SERVICE...]
decompose down
decompose ps
decompose logs [-f] [-n N] [SERVICE...]
decompose start [SERVICE...]
decompose stop [SERVICE...]
decompose restart [SERVICE...]
decompose kill [SERVICE...]
decompose config
decompose ls

up defaults to background startup with initialization/readiness waiting. Explicit -d skips the readiness wait unless combined with --wait. --foreground streams logs and owns a newly launched environment; it conflicts with -d, --wait, and --tui. --tui opens immediately unless --wait is explicit. --no-start skips the default wait and conflicts with --wait.

Global flags (--file, --session, -e/--env-file, --disable-dotenv) appear before the subcommand, matching docker compose -f FILE <cmd> shape.

Output modes: global --json or --table; text is always the default. Finite JSON results use schema 1.0; streams use JSON Lines. Diagnostics go to stderr through diagnostic.rs. output_model.rs owns public result types; IPC acknowledgments retain typed outcomes and legacy messages. See docs/cli-output.md for the migration and native-output exceptions.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
