CLAUDE.md

deskmail-ai CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from scrappy-builds/deskmail-ai. It costs 982 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A set of instructions for Claude Code when working on DeskMail AI, a private desktop email program for Windows. It describes the program, its rules, how to run and test it, and where its code lives.

In plain words
What is it for?
Guiding edits, testing, building, and safe handling of email, credentials, local storage, and the app's read-and-draft mail connector.
Why use it?
It gives the coding assistant the project context and safety boundaries needed before changing an existing email application.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00982 $0.00982
Opus 5 $0.00491 $0.00491
Sonnet 5 $0.00196 $0.00196
Haiku 4.5 $0.00098 $0.00098

Security

Grade A, and why

deskmail-ai CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

DeskMail AI — guide for Claude

You're helping someone modify an existing, working desktop email client. This file tells you how it's built, the rules you must not break, and how to run and test your changes. Read it before editing.

What this is

DeskMail AI is a local, single-user Electron + React + TypeScript email client for Windows. Mail is fetched over IMAP/SMTP and cached in a local SQLite database (node-sqlite3-wasm — WebAssembly, no native build). A separate MCP server lets Claude Desktop read and draft mail.

Golden rules (do not break these)

  1. Local-only, private. No telemetry, no analytics, no cloud accounts, no phoning home. Mail never leaves the machine except to the user's own mail server and their own Claude.
  2. Credentials stay secret. Passwords live in the OS keychain via Electron safeStorage. Never write a password to the database in plain text, never log it, never expose it to the renderer or the MCP server.
  3. The MCP connector is read-and-draft only. It may read, search, draft, and do reversible organise actions. It must never send mail, permanently delete, read credentials, or write files outside DeskMail's storage. The test in tests/unit/mcp.test.ts enforces the exact tool set — keep it honest.
  4. Never send or hard-delete without explicit user action. Draft ≠ send. Delete means move-to-Trash unless the user explicitly asks for permanent deletion (from Trash/Junk, behind a confirm).

How to run, test, build

npm install
npm run dev # app with hot reload
npm test # unit tests (Vitest)
npm run typecheck # tsc for both the node and web projects
npm run test:e2e # Playwright drives the built app
npm run build # production build into out/
npm run package # Windows installer into release/

Always run npm run typecheck and npm test after a change. For anything touching mail sync or the UI, verify in the real app (npm run dev) — see the project's verify skill notes if present.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
