sempods-kotlin: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/copilot-instructions.md

sempods-kotlin copilot-instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from sempods/sempods-kotlin. It costs 1,086 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

Project instructions for sempods-kotlin, a Kotlin and Java implementation of semantic pods: isolated data spaces that applications access over HTTP. They explain the project’s purpose, required rules, and development guidance.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when changing sempods modules, working with tenant or context permissions, or following the project’s Kotlin, documentation, and contribution requirements.
Why use it?
They provide the repository context and non-negotiable data-isolation rules needed to make safe changes.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01086 $0.01086
Opus 5.5 $0.00434 $0.00434
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00217 $0.00217
Haiku 4.5 $0.00109 $0.00109

Security

Grade A, and why

sempods-kotlin copilot-instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 13d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 85 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

GitHub Copilot instructions

The canonical guidance is the root AGENTS.md, reached through the shared hub docs/agents/ai-instructions.md. Read both when you can follow a link.

Copilot Chat loads this file in isolation, so the minimum is repeated below. It is a subset — the canonical file is the source of truth and this file is updated after it, never instead of it. For the invariants that canonical file is CONTRIBUTING.md §"What this project will not change"; for everything else it is AGENTS.md. The registered duplication is listed in the hub under "Auto-injection constraints".

What sempods is

An open standard and its Kotlin/JVM reference implementation for self-hosted "semantic pods": a pod is an isolated tenant holding RDF, reachable over HTTP, usable by many apps. Nineteen Gradle modules, fifteen of them published to Maven Central under org.sempods. Public repository, Apache-2.0.

Non-negotiable invariants

  1. Every statement belongs to exactly one context — a named graph, and the permission boundary.
  2. Reads and writes are sandboxed to the contexts a request holds rights for, enforced server-side; a client-supplied dataset clause — FROM / FROM NAMED and the protocol's graph parameters alike — is never trusted.
  3. A CRUD write names its target context explicitly — there is no implicit fallback.
  4. Context-based permissions are the single authorization model. No parallel policy language.
  5. Pods are isolated by default. Cross-pod access happens only through an explicit, specified mechanism.
  6. The protocol stays standard Semantic Web — RDF, SPARQL, JSON-LD, SHACL. Convenience belongs in client SDKs, not in the protocol.
  7. No false security promises. Revoking access means "no further access", not "forget what you already saw", and the documentation says so.

A change that breaks one of these is declined however well it is implemented. Errors are deterministic HTTP codes; prefer an explicit spec plus a conformance test over clever query rewriting.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
