w3c-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

w3c-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from shuji-bonji/w3c-mcp. It costs 851 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A project guide for coding agents working on W3C MCP, a server that provides web standards information such as specifications, CSS properties, HTML elements, and WebIDL through the Model Context Protocol.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when building, testing, formatting, or troubleshooting the W3C MCP server, especially when handling missing specifications or converting specification data.
Why use it?
It gives agents the project background, commands, coding rules, and required error-handling patterns so changes fit the existing codebase.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00851 $0.00851
Opus 5 $0.00426 $0.00426
Sonnet 5 $0.00170 $0.00170
Haiku 4.5 $0.00085 $0.00085

Measured 6d ago against content hash 28e1d2237425, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-11, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

w3c-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

W3C MCP Server — an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that exposes W3C/WHATWG/IETF web specifications (spec metadata, WebIDL, CSS properties, HTML elements) to AI assistants. Data comes from official npm packages (web-specs, @webref/*); this server adds caching, search, and MCP-shaped tools on top of them.

Common Commands

npm run build # Compile TypeScript
npm run dev # Watch mode compilation
npm test # Run Vitest — run before committing
npm run check # Biome lint + format (auto-fix)

Code Conventions

Error handling

Throw the custom error classes in src/errors/index.ts (SpecNotFoundError, WebIDLNotFoundError, CSSNotFoundError, ElementsNotFoundError) and let toolHandler() in src/index.ts format them via formatErrorResponse(). Not-found errors should include up to 10 spec-name suggestions generated by src/utils/suggestions.ts.

Tool registration (MCP SDK v2)

Tools are registered in createServer() (src/index.ts) with McpServer.registerTool(name, { description, inputSchema }, toolHandler(...)). inputSchema is the zod object from src/schemas/index.ts — the SDK validates arguments against it before the handler runs and generates the tools/list JSON Schema from it, so put parameter descriptions in .describe() on the zod fields rather than in a separate JSON Schema. Startup goes through serveStdio(), which serves both the initialize (2024-11-05 … 2025-11-25) and server/discover (2026-07-28) openings from the same factory.

Data mapping

Use toSpecSummary() / toSpecSummaries() from src/utils/mapper.ts for any SpecDetail → SpecSummary conversion. Do not reimplement this mapping inline.

Imports (ESM)

  • Use the .js extension on local relative imports (e.g. from './foo.js') — this is required for Node ESM, even in .ts source.
  • Use the node: prefix for built-ins (node:fs, node:path, ...).

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
