everything-mcp AGENTS.md

A set of coding-agent instructions for everything-mcp, a Windows-only MCP server that searches files through Everything. Everything is a Windows desktop search program that indexes file names for fast lookup.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when building, publishing, or modifying the server, its TypeScript client, its Windows SDK bindings, or its support for Everything versions 1.4 and 1.5.
Why use it?
It explains the project's build process, Windows prerequisites, architecture, SDK differences, and verification method. This prevents the agent from assuming the project works on other systems or uses only one SDK version.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00847 $0.00847
Opus 5 $0.00424 $0.00424
Sonnet 5 $0.00169 $0.00169
Haiku 4.5 $0.00085 $0.00085

Measured 2d ago against content hash 51748f8e0c88, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

everything-mcp AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Build & Run

pnpm install
pnpm build # tsc + postbuild.mjs (copies DLLs + entry point to dist/)
node dist/index.js # MCP server via stdio transport

No test suite, linter, or formatter. pnpm build (tsc) is the only verification step.

Build chain: tsc compiles src/dist/postbuild.mjs copies SDK DLLs from source dirs into dist/ and copies the everything-mcp.js npx entry template.

Publish: prepack script runs npm run build. Only dist/ is included in the published package.

Prerequisites

  • Windows only — Everything SDK is Windows-only
  • Everything 1.4+ must be installed and running
  • everything_sdk3/dll/ (SDK v3, Everything 1.5) and Everything-SDK/dll/ (SDK v2, Everything 1.4) ship in the repo and get copied to dist/ by postbuild.mjs

Architecture

src/index.ts # MCP server — tool definitions, request handlers, stdio transport
src/everything-client.ts # EverythingClient + SdkProvider interface (V3Provider / V2Provider)
src/ffi-bindings.ts # Raw FFI bindings to Everything3_*.dll (SDK v3, Everything 1.5)
src/ffi-bindings-v14.ts # Raw FFI bindings to Everything*.dll (SDK v2, Everything 1.4)
templates/everything-mcp.js # npx entry wrapper — sets SDK_DIR env vars and spawns dist/index.js
postbuild.mjs # Post-tsc step: copies DLLs + template into dist/

EverythingClient.connect() auto-detects SDK version: tries v3 first, falls back to v2. Override with EVERYTHING_SDK_VERSION=v3 or v2.

Key SDK differences (agents must know this)

Aspect SDK v3 (Everything 1.5) SDK v2 (Everything 1.4)
DLL names Everything3_x64.dll Everything64.dll
API prefix Everything3_* Everything_*
Connection Explicit ConnectW/DestroyClient Implicit via IPC on QueryW
State model Per-client, per-search-state objects Global mutable state
Search exec Search(client, state) returns list QueryW(TRUE) populates global results
Result props Must AddSearchPropertyRequest first Use SetRequestFlags bitmask
File info Direct GetFileAttributesW(client, path) Requires search with SetMatchPath(true)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
