In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to understand, edit, install, or maintain the paper-writing skill and its staged research-writing workflow.
Why use it?
It records how this particular repository works and how its writing method is organized. It helps maintain the skill correctly and install updated instructions where Claude can use them.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01116 $0.01116
Opus 5 $0.00558 $0.00558
Sonnet 5 $0.00223 $0.00223
Haiku 4.5 $0.00112 $0.00112

Security

Grade A, and why

paper-writing-skill CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What This Repo Is

A Claude Code skill (invoked via /paper-writing) that encodes the writing methodology of the Systems and Networking Lab (SNL) at UC Santa Barbara. Part of a three-skill family (literature-survey, data-visualization, paper-writing) that compresses the operational middle of the research pipeline. It is not a traditional codebase — there is no build system, no tests, and no application code. The repo contains markdown files that Claude reads at runtime to enforce editorial rules, rhetorical move sequences, and a structured writing pipeline.

Installation

./setup

This copies skill files into ~/.claude/skills/paper-writing/. Always edit files in this repo, then re-run ./setup to propagate changes.

Architecture

SKILL.md is the main entry point Claude reads when /paper-writing is invoked. It defines:

  • The three-layer model: fixed pipeline → customizable voice/editorial rules → per-paper project context
  • The five-stage writing pipeline: Brainstorming → Architecture → Section Drafts → Integration → Compression
  • The mandatory style audit gate (runs on every tex edit)
  • Section checklist and rhetorical move dispatch tables

author_profile/ contains the editorial rules (source of truth for all style enforcement). The style layer is organized into three files by mechanism — one mechanical gate, one semantic gate, one positive craft reference:

  • editorial_principles.md — 14 cross-paper principles with evidence from forensic revision analysis
  • craft_reference.md — how to write (the positive layer): sentence-level style (~21-word mean, claim-first, active voice, named-over-vague) and three registers (base/terse, conceptual/position, warm/narrative)
  • gate_mechanical.md — the single greppable style gate (M1–M18): em-dashes, antithesis, intensifiers, banned/pompous/fancy words, passive voice, wordiness, term-drift — one grep script
  • gate_semantic.md — the single reader-judgment gate (S1–S31): define-before-use, followability, coherence/consistency, rigor/grounding, honest positioning, figures, closure gate
  • compression_patterns.md — 7 compression operations with before/after examples
  • rhetorical_moves.md — cross-section move sequences
  • intervention_types.md — 7 advisor intervention types for draft review

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
