jira-mcp: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

jira-mcp AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from softspark/jira-mcp. It costs 2,923 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

Repository instructions for a Jira integration that lets AI tools manage Jira tasks, including searching, commenting, assigning, creating, and changing their status. Jira is a system teams use to track work; the instructions also describe its TypeScript codebase and checks.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when developing, reviewing, or testing this Jira and Confluence integration, including its shared code and task-management features.
Why use it?
They give an agent the project rules and commands needed to work on the integration without overlooking its package structure or pre-commit checks.

This is softspark/jira-mcp's own configuration. It tells Codex and OpenCode how to work on jira-mcp itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything jira-mcp configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.02923 $0.02923
Opus 5.5 $0.01169 $0.01169
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00585 $0.00585
Haiku 4.5 $0.00292 $0.00292

Security

Grade A, and why

jira-mcp AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

jira-mcp

Overview

Stdio MCP server (@softspark/jira-mcp) that lets AI agents and MCP clients (Claude Code, Cursor) drive Jira across multiple instances: sync, read, search, comment, transition status, log time, reassign, create, and delete tasks, with markdown to ADF conversion and a local task cache.

This repo is an npm workspace with three packages:

Path Package Published
packages/core @softspark/atlassian-mcp-core no, bundled into both servers
packages/jira-mcp @softspark/jira-mcp yes, bin jira-mcp
packages/confluence-mcp @softspark/confluence-mcp yes, bin confluence-mcp

Both servers share config.json, credentials.json, the ADF layer, the HTTP client and the error hierarchy via core, and keep separate tool lists on purpose: merging them would put near-homonyms (search_tasks/search_pages) in one list and degrade tool selection. packages/core/tests/tool-name-collisions.test.ts asserts they never overlap. See kb/reference/confluence.md.

Tech Stack

  • Language: TypeScript, strict mode, ESM, Node >= 18. No any, import type for types, .js import specifiers, moduleResolution: bundler.
  • Framework: @modelcontextprotocol/sdk (server) and commander (CLI). Zod for schema validation, tsup for build, Vitest for tests, ESLint for lint.
  • Database: none. Config, credentials, cache, and templates are JSON files under ~/.softspark/jira-mcp/. The Jira REST API is the system of record; the cache is a local read mirror.

Commands

npm run dev # run the CLI from source (tsx src/cli.ts)
npm test # vitest run (test:coverage for the 70% gate, test:watch to iterate)
npm run lint # eslint src/ tests/ (lint:fix to autofix)
npm run typecheck # tsc --noEmit
npm run build # tsup, flat-bundles src into dist/
# pre-commit gate:
npm run typecheck && npm run lint && npm test && npm run build

Key Conventions

Only the non-obvious rules live here. Full agent rules in rules/jira-mcp.md and AGENTS.md; deep docs in kb/.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
