saiku: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/copilot-instructions.md

saiku copilot-instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from spiculedata/saiku. It costs 634 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

Coding-agent instructions for the Saiku repository, with rules for branches, commits, Java formatting, Spring wiring, REST resources, compiler versions, and tests.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when making or reviewing Saiku changes, especially when choosing a branch, writing a commit, adding Java or REST code, or running verification.
Why use it?
They give an agent the repository's required conventions in one place and help prevent changes that pass locally but violate project checks or architecture.

About the project

Saiku is an open-source semantic layer that represents data as analytical cubes for browser exploration, SQL queries, dashboards, and AI-agent access. It is for analysts and applications that need to query structured business data through Mondrian, Apache Calcite, REST, or MCP. The catalogue instruction helps agents work with Saiku.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00634 $0.00634
Opus 5.5 $0.00254 $0.00254
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00127 $0.00127
Haiku 4.5 $0.00063 $0.00063

Security

Grade A, and why

saiku copilot-instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 16d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Copilot instructions

Full project guidance lives in AGENTS.md at the repo root. Read it before making changes. The rules below are the ones most often broken, repeated here because Copilot code review reads only this file.

Repo rules

  • Agent policy: the Working agreement section of AGENTS.md (deliverables, hard stops, the issue-approved / human-queue label model) applies to Copilot too. Skills live in .agents/skills/; load only the one that matches the task.

  • Branching: Gitflow. Work on feature/<name>, fix/<name> or chore/<name> off development, and open PRs against development, never main.

  • Commit messages: #<issue> - <description>.

  • Java formatting: Palantir Java Format via Spotless. Run mvn spotless:apply before committing; mvn verify fails on unformatted code.

  • Spring wiring: beans go in the applicationContext-*.xml / saiku-beans.xml files, not @Configuration classes.

  • REST: Jersey 3.1 JAX-RS resources (jakarta.ws.rs.*) under org.saiku.web.rest.resources, not Spring @RestController.

  • Compiler levels: the root pom pins old source levels on purpose; modules that need Java 21/22 override locally. Don't "fix" the root pom.

  • Tests: CI runs mvn -B -ntp -DskipITs=false verify. .github/test-floors.json and .coverage-thresholds.json are hard floors. Add tests; never delete them to get green.

  • Acceptance specs, first: a PR that closes issue N ships acceptance/N/spec.json, committed BEFORE the implementation. acceptance / spec fails on base fails a spec that already passes on the base build; only a human may excuse it with the spec-already-green label. See AGENTS.md and docs/acceptance-specs.md.

  • UI (saiku-ui/): Tailwind v4 with design-system tokens only. ESLint bans raw tone classes (bg-emerald-*, text-red-*, …) outside the design system. Import design-system pieces from the barrels ($lib/design-system, $lib/components/ui), never deep paths.

  • Svelte 5: never call a helper that writes $state synchronously inside an $effect that also reads it. Defer with queueMicrotask or untrack.

  • FoodMart schema: edit saiku-launcher/src/main/resources/seed/FoodMart4.xml, not the runtime copy under saiku-home/.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
