plan-forge database.instructions.md

A set of .NET database guidelines covering Dapper, a lightweight database library, and Entity Framework Core, a .NET database framework.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when writing queries, choosing between Dapper and Entity Framework Core, managing connections through dependency injection, or adding cancellation to database operations.
Why use it?
It helps avoid unsafe SQL, unmanaged database connections, and database calls that cannot be cancelled.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.01888 $0.01888
Opus 5 $0.00944 $0.00944
Sonnet 5 $0.00378 $0.00378
Haiku 4.5 $0.00189 $0.00189

Security

Grade A, and why

plan-forge database.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

.NET Database Patterns

ORM Strategy

Option A: Dapper (Micro-ORM)

// Always use parameterized queries
const string sql = "SELECT * FROM users WHERE email = @Email";
var user = await connection.QuerySingleOrDefaultAsync<User>(sql, new { Email = email });

Option B: Entity Framework Core

var user = await _context.Users
    .Where(u => u.Email == email)
    .FirstOrDefaultAsync(cancellationToken);

Non-Negotiable Rules

Parameterized Queries (SQL Injection Prevention)

// ❌ NEVER: String interpolation in SQL
var sql = $"SELECT * FROM users WHERE id = '{userId}'";

// ✅ ALWAYS: Parameters
const string sql = "SELECT * FROM users WHERE id = @UserId";
await connection.QueryAsync<User>(sql, new { UserId = userId });

Connection Management

// ❌ NEVER: Manual connection creation
using var conn = new NpgsqlConnection(connectionString);

// ✅ ALWAYS: Use DI / connection factory
using var conn = await _connectionFactory.CreateConnectionAsync(cancellationToken);

Async with CancellationToken

// ❌ NEVER: Sync database calls
var result = connection.Query<User>(sql);

// ✅ ALWAYS: Async with cancellation
var result = await connection.QueryAsync<User>(sql, cancellationToken: cancellationToken);

Migration Strategy

Non-Negotiable Migration Rules

  • NEVER deploy a destructive migration (drop column/table) in the same release that removes the code using it
  • ALWAYS review generated SQL before applying to staging or production — dotnet ef migrations script --idempotent
  • ALWAYS make migrations backward-compatible — the old version of the app must still work after the migration runs
  • ALWAYS test migrations against a copy of production data before applying to production
  • NEVER use EnsureCreated() in production — it bypasses the migration pipeline
  • ALWAYS run migrations as a separate pipeline step before deploying the new app version

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

plan-forge database.instructions.md is an instructions file published in the GitHub repository srnichols/plan-forge (5 stars, last pushed 21d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 1,888 tokens to every session, about $0.0094 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
