powerbi-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

powerbi-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from sulaiman013/powerbi-mcp. It costs 294 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Developer instructions for powerbi-mcp, a server that lets tools work with Power BI data models and reports. They cover model edits, DAX validation, dependency checks, schema lookup, and testing the server's tool registry.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when renaming Power BI objects, editing model expressions, checking measure dependencies, reading the Desktop schema, reloading Power BI Desktop, or running the server's tests.
Why use it?
They reduce errors from using outdated rename tools, invalid DAX, broken references, or incorrect Power BI object names. They also help keep the server's registered tools and tests in sync.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00294 $0.00294
Opus 5 $0.00147 $0.00147
Sonnet 5 $0.00059 $0.00059
Haiku 4.5 $0.00029 $0.00029

Security

Grade A, and why

powerbi-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

CLAUDE.md

Agent guidance for this repository lives in AGENTS.md. Read it before driving Power BI tasks through this MCP server.

Quick reminders:

  • Rename with the pbip_* tools, never the deprecated TOM batch_rename_* tools.
  • validate_dax before committing measures; batch model edits inside a tom_begin_transaction / tom_commit_transaction scope.
  • scan_measure_dependencies + pbip_scan_broken_refs before destructive changes.
  • Read the powerbi://desktop/schema resource to ground DAX in real object names.
  • After offline PBIP/PBIR edits, hot-reload the open Desktop with bridge_reload (never over unsaved changes) instead of asking the user to close and reopen.

Developer notes

  • Source: src/ (server.py + connectors + security/ + model_analysis.py).
  • Tests: tests/test_*.py are assert-based and run without Power BI (pure-Python paths). Run them after changes: python run_tests.py (or python tests/test_<name>.py).
  • Every tool registers in one place (_build_tool_dispatch + _build_tool_annotations
    • handle_list_tools in src/server.py); keep the three in sync (a parity test guards this).
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
