agent-skills: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

agent-skills AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from surrealdb/agent-skills. It costs 399 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for creating skills that coding agents can follow. They explain the folder layout, required metadata, writing rules, and the need to document new skills in the README.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when adding or reviewing a skill in the repository, including its SKILL.md file, optional reference files, metadata, and README entry.
Why use it?
They provide the project’s rules for making skills discoverable and consistent. A skill is a reusable set of instructions for an agent.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00399 $0.00399
Opus 5 $0.00199 $0.00199
Sonnet 5 $0.00080 $0.00080
Haiku 4.5 $0.00040 $0.00040

Measured 8d ago against content hash 64cced6543af, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

agent-skills AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Repository Structure

    SKILL.md
    references/ (optional)

Creating a New Skill

Skills follow the Agent Skills Open Standard.

  1. Create directory: mkdir -p skills/{skill-name}/references
  2. Create SKILL.md with YAML frontmatter (name, description) and Markdown body
  3. Add reference files under references/ if the skill body exceeds ~500 lines
  4. Ensure the name in frontmatter matches the directory name
  5. Update README.md to describe the skill and when to use it

Frontmatter (Required)

---
name: skill-name
description: What this skill does and when to use it.
metadata:
  author: surrealdb
  version: "0.1.0"
---
Field Required Constraints
name Yes 1-64 chars. Lowercase alphanumeric and hyphens only.
description Yes 1-1024 chars. Describe what the skill does AND when to use it.
metadata No Arbitrary key-value pairs (e.g., author, version).

Body Guidelines

  • Keep under 500 lines; move detailed content to references/
  • Use imperative form ("Create the table", not "You should create the table")
  • Include concise examples over verbose explanations
  • Version bumps: any change to SKILL.md or references/ should bump version

What NOT to Include in Skills

Skills should only contain essential files. Do NOT create README, CHANGELOG, or installation guides inside skill directories.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
