handrail: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

handrail CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from svyatov/handrail. It costs 390 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for handrail, a project whose behaviour is defined by specification documents and checked through automated tasks. They describe its commands, dependency limits, process structure, tests, and issue-tracking rules.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when changing handrail, running its tests, coverage, linting, or build, adding test-script cases, or managing GitHub issues and their labels.
Why use it?
They make local testing match continuous integration and enforce constraints such as no third-party runtime dependencies and keeping the main process testable.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00390 $0.00390
Opus 5 $0.00195 $0.00195
Sonnet 5 $0.00078 $0.00078
Haiku 4.5 $0.00039 $0.00039

Measured 6d ago against content hash 4263bdac069f, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-06, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

handrail CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

handrail

docs/spec.md is the behavioural source of truth. CONTEXT.md defines the vocabulary.

Commands

task test # go test -race -shuffle=on ./...
task cover # the same run with coverage, fails under 95%
task lint # golangci-lint run, then fmt --diff
task build # the release build

CI calls these same tasks, so a local pass means what a green check means.

Two constraints the build enforces

  • Zero third-party runtime dependencies. depguard allows only the stdlib and this module outside _test.go; github.com/rogpeppe/go-internal is the sole test-only one.
  • os.Exit only in main.go, so run() returns an exit code and stays testable. forbidigo enforces it.

Tests

testscript over the compiled binary is the primary seam: a new case goes in testdata/script/*.txtar, not a new _test.go. Unit tests under internal/ are only for what a process boundary cannot produce. See docs/adr/0009-testing-strategy.md.

Agent skills

Issue tracker

Issues live as GitHub issues in svyatov/handrail, managed via the gh CLI. See docs/agents/issue-tracker.md.

Triage labels

The five canonical roles, each label string equal to its name. See docs/agents/triage-labels.md.

Domain docs

Single-context: CONTEXT.md + docs/adr/ at the repo root. See docs/agents/domain.md.

Semantic code navigation

Serena's LSP symbol tools, optional, needs gopls. See docs/agents/serena.md.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
