next-role: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

next-role AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from tam159/next-role. It costs 2,520 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of repository instructions for coding agents working in the NextRole project. It explains the project layout, technology choices, documentation locations, and files that agents must not read.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when an agent edits the NextRole monorepo, a repository containing multiple related applications, to find the right source and follow its local conventions.
Why use it?
It gives an agent the project-specific rules needed to work safely in a codebase with several applications and shared guidance. It also prevents wasting context on generated files that are not meant to be read.

Instructions file for CodexOpenCode

Written for Codex and OpenCode: the file is AGENTS.md. Also seen: reads .claude/ paths; mentions Claude Code; mentions AGENTS.md.

This is tam159/next-role's own configuration. It tells Codex and OpenCode how to work on next-role itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything next-role configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.02520 $0.02520
Opus 5.5 $0.01008 $0.01008
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00504 $0.00504
Haiku 4.5 $0.00252 $0.00252

Security

Grade A, and why

next-role AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 29d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Layout

Monorepo with three top-level apps. Each has its own AGENTS.md with stack-specific guidance:

  • backend/ — Python 3.13, uv, FastAPI-style agents (LangChain / LangGraph / DeepAgents). See @backend/AGENTS.md.
  • frontend/ — Next.js 16, React 19, TypeScript, Tailwind, pnpm. See @frontend/AGENTS.md.
  • analytics/ — Python 3.13, uv; dlt + dbt + Dagster pipelines into ClickHouse, Cube models, Superset bootstrap. See @analytics/AGENTS.md.
  • docker-compose.yml runs the full local stack.

.ua/ — generated codebase graph (never read)

.ua/ holds a generated Understand-Anything knowledge graph that humans browse in a dashboard (README → "Explore the codebase graph"). Never read, grep, glob, or index anything under .ua/ — it is megabytes of generated JSON that wastes context and goes stale. Answer from the real source code and the checked-in *.md docs instead. Claude Code additionally hard-blocks it via the Read(/.ua/**) deny rule in .claude/settings.json, and Cursor via .cursorignore; for tools with no enforced ignore mechanism (e.g. Codex, which reads this file as its project doc), this instruction is the only guard.

docs/prd/ — feature PRDs (OKF knowledge bundle)

Per-feature design docs are an OKF bundle: markdown + YAML frontmatter (type, title, description, tags, status, …). Read them with progressive disclosure to save tokens:

  1. Start at docs/prd/index.md — one line per PRD (title + description). Don't bulk-read the folder.
  2. Open only the PRDs relevant to your task; follow their relative Extends:/Supersedes: links for lineage.
  3. Never read docs/prd/viz.html — the generated human-facing graph (guarded like .ua/ via a deny rule and .cursorignore; for tools without an enforced ignore, this instruction is the guard). Humans view/regenerate it per docs/prd/README.md.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
