arxiv-agent-mcp: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

arxiv-agent-mcp AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from tbaraniuk/arxiv-agent-mcp. It costs 451 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of agent instructions describing a test-first development process and the roles of test-writer and implementer agents. TDD, or test-driven development, means writing tests for expected behavior before implementing the code.

In plain words
What is it for?
Writing mocked pytest tests, implementing the code needed to pass them, checking error cases, and reviewing each task's changes.
Why use it?
It defines how tasks should be split, tested, implemented, and reviewed without weakening the tests.

Written for Codex and OpenCode: the file is AGENTS.md. Also seen: reads .claude/ paths; mentions CLAUDE.md; mentions subagents.

This is tbaraniuk/arxiv-agent-mcp's own configuration. It tells Codex and OpenCode how to work on arxiv-agent-mcp itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything arxiv-agent-mcp configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00451 $0.00451
Opus 5 $0.00226 $0.00226
Sonnet 5 $0.00090 $0.00090
Haiku 4.5 $0.00045 $0.00045

Security

Grade A, and why

arxiv-agent-mcp AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

AGENTS.md

How this project gets built: one task from TASKS.md at a time, as a test-first pair of dispatched agents. See the plan for full context: ~/.claude/plans/purring-orbiting-cocoa.md (or ask Claude Code to re-derive it from this file + TASKS.md + ai_agentic_lab_assignment.md).

Roles

test-writer

Given one TASKS.md item:

  • Writes the pytest tests for that item's behavior and its stated error cases.
  • Mocks all network calls (arXiv, OpenAlex, OpenRouter) — no live network in unit tests.
  • Does not write implementation code.
  • Runs the new tests and confirms they fail for the right reason (missing implementation, not a typo/import error).

implementer

Given the same task and its failing tests:

  • Writes the minimum code to make the tests pass.
  • Does not weaken, delete, or rewrite the tests to make them pass.
  • Runs the full test file(s) for the task and confirms green.

Per-task loop

  1. Dispatch test-writer for the task.
  2. Confirm tests fail for the right reason.
  3. Dispatch implementer for the same task.
  4. Confirm tests pass.
  5. Quick review of the diff (schema matches the contract in the plan, no scope creep).
  6. Move to the next task in TASKS.md.

No shared worktree/ledger/multi-round fix-loop machinery — each task is small enough that a fresh agent per role, plus one review pass, is enough. (See superpowers:subagent-driven-development if a task ever needs that heavier process.)

Non-negotiable constraints (from the assignment — see CLAUDE.md)

  • The custom MCP server (custom_server/) must run as its own process, independently startable.
  • At least 3 substantive custom tools; only one may be retrieval-shaped.
  • No secrets committed — .env is gitignored, .env.example documents the shape.
  • Errors must be distinguishable from a successful-but-empty result in every tool.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
