tene GEMINI.md

tene GEMINI.md is an instructions file for Gemini CLI from tene-ai/tene. It costs 532 tokens per session, scanned A, a copy of tene AGENTS.md, MIT.

Project instructions for tene, a local tool that stores encrypted secrets and provides them to commands as environment variables. Secrets are private values such as API keys and database passwords.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them to list, add, retrieve, import, export, switch, and inject secrets into development commands.
Why use it?
They reduce the risk of putting secrets in source code or .env files and document the commands used to manage them.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00532 $0.00532
Opus 5 $0.00266 $0.00266
Sonnet 5 $0.00106 $0.00106
Haiku 4.5 $0.00053 $0.00053

Security

Grade A, and why

tene GEMINI.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Secrets Management — tene

This project uses tene for secret management. Secrets are encrypted locally with XChaCha20-Poly1305. No server, no cloud.

Quick Reference

Task Command
List available secrets tene list
Get a secret value tene get <KEY>
Get secret as JSON tene get <KEY> --json
Set a secret tene set <KEY> <VALUE>
Set from stdin `echo "value"
Run with secrets injected tene run -- <command>
Import from .env tene import .env
Export to .env tene export
Switch environment tene env <name>
List environments tene env list

Rules

  1. Never hardcode secrets in source code, config files, or comments
  2. Never create .env files — use tene run -- <command> to inject secrets as environment variables
  3. Access secrets via environment variablesprocess.env.KEY_NAME (Node.js), os.Getenv("KEY_NAME") (Go), os.environ["KEY_NAME"] (Python)
  4. Use tene list first to check what secrets are available before asking the user
  5. If a secret is missing, tell the user to run: tene set <KEY> <VALUE>
  6. Use --json flag for programmatic parsing: tene get KEY --json returns {"name":"KEY","value":"...","environment":"..."}
  7. Environment isolation: secrets are scoped per environment (default, dev, staging, prod). Use --env <name> to target a specific environment

Available Environments

Run tene env list to see all environments and which is active.

Example Workflows

Starting a new feature that needs an API key

  1. Check if key exists: tene list
  2. If not: ask user to run tene set STRIPE_KEY sk_test_xxx
  3. Use in code via process.env.STRIPE_KEY
  4. Run/test with: tene run -- npm test

Running the project

tene run -- npm start # Node.js
tene run -- go run . # Go
tene run -- python main.py # Python
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
