About the project

notebooklm-py is an unofficial Python library and command-line interface that lets programs and AI agents use Google Gemini Notebook, including features unavailable in its web interface. It supports automated research and content workflows for developers, researchers, and personal projects. The catalogue entries provide agent skills and instructions for operating NotebookLM through coding agents.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01905 $0.01905
Opus 5 $0.00953 $0.00953
Sonnet 5 $0.00381 $0.00381
Haiku 4.5 $0.00191 $0.00191

Security

Grade A, and why

notebooklm-py CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

notebooklm-py is an unofficial async Python client for Google NotebookLM. It drives Google's internal batchexecute RPC protocol to automate notebooks, sources, AI querying, and studio artifacts (podcasts, videos, quizzes, …).

Critical constraint: the obfuscated RPC method IDs in src/notebooklm/rpc/_identifiers.py are undocumented and can break whenever Google changes them — the #1 breakage class. rpc/types.py is the compatibility-facing re-export.

Development Commands

# Canonical contributor install — matches the extras CI's test job installs.
# Full guide: docs/installation.md
uv sync --frozen --extra browser --extra dev --extra markdown \
--extra mcp --extra server --extra impersonate
source .venv/bin/activate
uv run playwright install chromium

uv run pytest # all tests (e2e excluded by default)
uv run pytest --cov # with coverage
uv run pytest tests/e2e -m e2e # e2e (requires auth)
uv run notebooklm --help # CLI

Install the full extras set. Omitting mcp/server does not fail — it skips. tests/unit/mcp/ and the server suites are importorskip-guarded, so without fastmcp/fastapi they vanish silently and their source counts as uncovered. Measured on one commit: the three-extra install runs 13,939 tests at 84.39% coverage and fails the 90% gate, while CI's set runs 15,478 at 96.61% and passes. That ~1,500-test blind spot hid a real MCP-adapter defect through eight red CI jobs on #2198.

To approximate the nightly coverage gate (.github/workflows/nightly.yml — nightly actually splits coverage into a marker-filtered xdist pass plus a serial Playwright --cov-append pass and checks per-file floors via scripts/check_coverage_thresholds.py; PR cells run the same suite without coverage):

uv run pytest -n auto --dist loadgroup --cov=src/notebooklm \
  --cov-report=term-missing --cov-fail-under=90

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
