claude-code-mascot-statusline: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

claude-code-mascot-statusline CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from TeXmeijin/claude-code-mascot-statusline. It costs 5,185 tokens per session, scanned B, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for a Claude Code plugin that displays a small pixel-art mascot in the terminal status line and changes its appearance based on session activity.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when changing sprite packs, reading session state, detecting activity from hooks or transcripts, or rendering the mascot in the status line.
Why use it?
They clarify that the mascot must use real sprite data and that status detection must reflect current session activity rather than defaulting to idle.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.05185 $0.05185
Opus 5 $0.02593 $0.02593
Sonnet 5 $0.01037 $0.01037
Haiku 4.5 $0.00519 $0.00519

Security

Grade B, and why

claude-code-mascot-statusline CLAUDE.md scanned grade B with 2 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Reads agent configuration directoriesmediumAgent snooping

.claude/, .codex/, .gemini/ hold keys, settings and other credentials a mod has no legitimate need for.

Claude Code plugin metadata does not automatically activate `statusLine`. The user must still have `statusLine` configured in `~/.claude/settings.json`.

Runs shell commandslowCapability

Expected in a hook, worth knowing in a rule or an instructions file.

const tty = execSync('ps -o tty= -p $(ps -o ppid= -p $$)', { shell: '/bin/sh' }).trim();

CLAUDE.md

This repository is a Claude Code mascot plugin. The mascot is rendered in Claude Code's status line as terminal pixel art, not ASCII art.

Project Summary

The plugin has three responsibilities:

  1. Observe Claude Code session activity
  2. Convert that activity into abstract mascot states
  3. Render a small pixel sprite that reflects the current state

The mascot system is intentionally split so that pack authors draw sprites, while runtime code handles state detection and terminal rendering.

Core Design

1. Sprite-first pack format

Pack files use specVersion: 2 and define:

  • Fixed sprite dimensions
  • Palette colors
  • Named sprite frames as 2D palette-index arrays
  • State-to-frame mappings

This is deliberate. A previous approach allowed rendered text art and produced malformed “cute ASCII” instead of genuine pixel sprites. That direction is out of scope for this project.

Relevant files:

2. Dual-source state detection

Runtime state is derived from two sources:

  • Hook-persisted state in $CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR/plugins/claude-code-mascot-statusline/state (default: ~/.claude/plugins/claude-code-mascot-statusline/state)
  • Transcript-derived state from transcript_path

Hook state is useful when hooks are installed correctly. Transcript-derived state is more resilient because statusLine receives transcript_path even when the plugin's hooks were never merged into settings.json.

This fallback is critical in real installations.

Relevant files:

3. Terminal rendering strategy

The renderer supports:

  • bg-space Uses ANSI background color on spaces. Best when width is available.
  • half-block Uses , , plus ANSI foreground/background colors. Best for compact, legible faces.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

claude-code-mascot-statusline CLAUDE.md is an instructions file published in the GitHub repository TeXmeijin/claude-code-mascot-statusline (24 stars, last pushed 4mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 5,185 tokens to every session, about $0.0259 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it B with 2 findings (reads agent configuration directories, runs shell commands). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
