soma AGENTS.md

soma AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from the-metafactory/soma. It costs 783 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A repository instruction file explains how to work on Soma, a portable personal AI assistant core that can run through several coding-agent hosts.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for guiding changes to Soma and verifying them with its Bun tests and type checks.
Why use it?
It gives contributors one set of rules for architecture, supported integrations, scripts, and checks.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00783 $0.00783
Opus 5 $0.00392 $0.00392
Sonnet 5 $0.00157 $0.00157
Haiku 4.5 $0.00078 $0.00078

Measured 4d ago against content hash 846fa49aaef8, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

soma AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Soma Agent Instructions

Soma is the substrate-portable Personal AI Assistant core. It extracts the assistant body from any one host: identity, telos, ISA, skills, memory, policy, learning, and adapter contracts.

How To Work In This Repo

  • Treat ISA.md as the current source of truth for scope, criteria, decisions, and verification.
  • Read README.md, docs/architecture.md, and docs/substrate-adapters.md before changing architecture.
  • Keep substrate-specific behavior behind adapter boundaries.
  • Keep the core filesystem-native and model-provider-neutral.
  • Prefer deterministic TypeScript contracts over prompt-only conventions.
  • Use Bun for scripts and tests.
  • Verify changes with bun test and bun run typecheck.

Substrate Adapters

Shipped adapters, each projecting the same Soma core into substrate-native primitives (see docs/substrate-adapters.md):

  • codex~/.codex/ rules + lifecycle hook
  • claude-codeCLAUDE.md, ~/.claude/ rules, hooks, skills
  • cursor.cursorrules + .cursor/rules/soma/
  • pi-dev~/.pi/agent/ core extension + skills
  • grok~/.grok/ auto-loaded skills + AGENTS.md pointer, native subagent surfaces, and fail-closed PreToolUse hooks (Windows-verified)
  • dsh~/.dsh/ auto-discovered skills + AGENTS.md pointer (DeepSeek Harness; loader-mode registry symlinks)

Codex Bootstrap

Codex currently consumes Soma through this repo-level AGENTS.md. That makes the repository inhabitable by Codex before a dedicated plugin or daemon exists.

The first Codex implementation target is:

src/adapters/codex.ts

That adapter should implement the SomaAdapter interface from src/types.ts and produce a Projection that Codex can use as a local instruction package.

Design Boundaries

Soma does not replace:

  • Cortex as the collaboration surface
  • Myelin as the bus/protocol stack
  • Arc as the package manager
  • Signal as observability
  • Spawn as isolated execution
  • Compass as governance

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
