copilot-instructions: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/instructions/prompt-templates.instructions.md

copilot-instructions prompt-templates.instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from ThiagoGuislotti/copilot-instructions. It costs 2,351 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of guidelines for writing clear prompts with context, an objective, requirements, acceptance criteria, and an expected output.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to write prompts for coding tasks, planning, calculations, or other work that needs a precise result.
Why use it?
It reduces vague instructions and makes prompts easier to execute, review, and reuse.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.02351 $0.02351
Opus 5 $0.01175 $0.01175
Sonnet 5 $0.00470 $0.00470
Haiku 4.5 $0.00235 $0.00235

Measured 4d ago against content hash 2f5b216bdc88, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-08, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

copilot-instructions prompt-templates.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Prompt Engineering Standards

Core Principles

Specific context before objective; clear actionable requirements; measurable acceptance criteria; well‑defined output.

Rule: One prompt = one measurable objective.

Prompt Structure (5-Part Framework)

Context (specific file/component) → Objective (what to do) → Requirements (how) → Acceptance (done) → Output (result format).

Context: file src/hooks/useApi.ts lines 10–25
Objective: add exponential retry with jitter
Requirements: keep current interface; configurable timeout; max 3 attempts
Acceptance: existing tests passing; coverage >= 80%
Output: diff of modified function only

Prompting Techniques

1. Chain of Thought (CoT)

When: Multi-step logical problems, planning, calculations. Pattern: Request step-by-step reasoning with numbered steps. Risk: Reasoning leakage to users; use "concise reasoning" or "hidden CoT" for production.

Context: Calculate order total with discounts and taxes
Objective: Solve using step-by-step validation
Requirements: Show reasoning in numbered steps; conclude with "Final answer: <value>"
Output: {"steps": [...], "answer": "...", "confidence": 0.0-1.0}

2. Skeleton of Thought (SoT)

When: Long responses with predictable structure (articles, reports, plans). Pattern: Generate skeleton first; expand after approval.

Phase 1 (Outline):

Context: Technical architecture document for microservices migration
Objective: Generate only skeleton with sections and bullets
Requirements: No full text; only titles and bullet points
Output: Markdown outline with ## headers and - bullets

Phase 2 (Expansion):

Context: Approved skeleton from previous response
Objective: Expand each section maintaining bullet structure
Requirements: Keep bullets as subtitles; add details per section
Output: Full markdown document

3. Tree of Thought (ToT)

When: Exploring multiple approaches (design decisions, architecture, strategy). Pattern: Generate alternatives, score paths, choose best.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
